Titans Defeat Second Straight Nationally Ranked Opponent

Taylor Schmidt scored a season-high 23 points and Eliza Campbell notched her first career double-double to lead UW-Oshkosh to a 79-66 victory over UW-Whitewater in a battle of nationally ranked women's basketball teams on Wednesday (Jan. 20) in Whitewater.

Schmidt converted 6 of 12 shots from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and all eight free throws to finish one point shy of her career-best 24 established last season against UW-Stout. She led all players with four assists.

Campbell added 12 points, a career-high 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. UW-Oshkosh starters Ashley Neustifter and Alex Richard had 10 points apiece, while Morgan Kokta chipped in nine off the bench.

UW-Oshkosh (13-3, 4-1 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, held a lead over 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater (13-3, 2-3 WIAC) for the last 25:44 of the contest.

The Titans shot 52.4 percent (22-42) from the field, including a season-best 60 percent (9-15) from 3-point range, and held a 30-19 advantage in rebounds. UW-Oshkosh also converted 26 of 30 (86.7 percent) attempts from the free throw line, including 11 of 12 (91.7 percent) during the fourth quarter.

UW-Oshkosh, which extended its winning streak to four games, moved into a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings with UW-River Falls (13-3, 4-1 WIAC) and UW-Stevens Point (13-3, 4-1) with nine league games remaining.

UW-Whitewater's Reilly Stewart hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, but UW-Oshkosh never trailed after Richard made a layup to give the Titans a 4-3 advantage at the 8:01 mark of the first quarter.

A 3-pointer by Neustifter capped a string of seven straight UW-Oshkosh points for a 7-3 Titan lead before the Warhawks rallied to tie the score at 14 after the first quarter.

UW-Whitewater's Andrea Olsen knotted the score at 20 on a layup with 6:04 left in the second period. UW-Oshkosh responded with a layup by Isabella Samuels just 20 seconds later, and the Titans maintained a lead for the remainder of the game.

Schmidt drilled a 3-pointer to provide the Titans with their largest lead of the first half at 27-20 with just over three minutes to play in the second quarter, and a jumper by Campbell gave UW-Oshkosh a 31-26 advantage at intermission.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Neustifter and Kokta increased the Titan lead to 49-39 with 3:57 left in the third quarter, but Brooke Trewyn accounted for UW-Whitewater's final six points of the period as the Warhawks cut their deficit to 57-51.

UW-Oshkosh's Emma Melotik connected on a pair of 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter, and a long-range basket by Kokta pushed the Titan lead back to 66-54 with just over eight minutes left.

A jumper by Campbell put the Titans ahead, 70-59, at the 3:53 mark, and UW-Oshkosh preserved the victory by converting 9 of 10 free throws during the final 79 seconds.

UW-Whitewater ended the game shooting 23-for-50 (46 percent) from the field and 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the foul line. The Warhawks held advantages in turnovers (17-12) and steals (8-4).

Trewyn led five UW-Whitewater double-figure scorers with 12 points and a team-best five rebounds off the bench. UW-Whitewater starters Malia Smith, Olsen and Stewart added 11 points each, while reserve Andrea Meinert contributed 10 points.

UW-Oshkosh plays UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Menomonie.
