Titans Put Pointers Away With Big Second Half

Taylor Schmidt scored all of her game-high 16 points in the second half, lifting the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team to a 60-46 triumph over UW-Stevens Point in a battle of nationally ranked teams on Saturday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (12-3, 3-1 WIAC), ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, outscored 14th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 43-22, in the second half by shooting 65.2 percent (15-23) from the floor during the final two periods, including 66.7 percent (6-9) from 3-point range.

Alex Richard added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Titans, who also received nine points from Eliza Campbell and eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds from Marissa Selner.

The Titans ended the game shooting 45.1 percent (23-51) from the field compared to 39 percent (16-41) for the Pointers. UW-Oshkosh also held advantages in assists (12-5), turnovers (18-12) and steals (9-5). The Titans went into the game leading the nation with an average of just 11.7 turnovers per contest.

UW-Oshkosh jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but UW-Stevens Point (12-3, 3-1 WIAC) scored nine unanswered points for a 12-8 advantage with 27 seconds to go in the first quarter. A layup by Richard at the buzzer trimmed the UW-Oshkosh deficit to 12-10 after one period.

The Pointers held their largest lead of eight points at 22-14 with 3:11 remaining in the second quarter, and a layup by Taylor Barrett gave UW-Stevens Point a 24-17 lead at intermission.

The Titans shot just 28.6 percent (8-28) from the floor and didn't attempt a free throw during the first half. The Pointers shot 36.8 percent (7-19) from the field in the opening half, but converted 8 of 12 free throws (66.7 percent).

A 3-pointer by UW-Oshkosh's Ashley Neustifter, who led all players with four assists, tied the score at 34 and ignited a 9-0 scoring run that gave the Titans the lead for good.

UW-Oshkosh connected from long range on four consecutive possessions. Kendell Truttman drilled the last long shot of the 3-point barrage for a 37-34 UW-Oshkosh advantage, and a layup by Selner upped the Titans' lead to 39-34 after three quarters.

UW-Oshkosh's nine-point surge ended when Lauren Anklam sank a 3-pointer to trim UW-Stevens Point's deficit to 40-37 with 9:21 left to play.

Clinging to a 42-39 advantage, UW-Oshkosh tallied five straight points, taking a 47-39 lead on a 3-pointer by Schmidt with 6:03 left.

A layup by Richard made the score 51-44 with 4:21 remaining, and a jumper by Campbell extended the lead to 55-46 with 1:50 to go. A pair of free throws by Schmidt and a 3-pointer by Morgan Kokta closed the scoring.

UW-Oshkosh made its last five field goal attempts, outscoring the Pointers, 18-7, during the last 7:37 of the contest.

Anklam paced UW-Stevens Point with 13 points.

Allie Miceli added seven points and nine rebounds for the Pointers, who saw their nine-game winning streak end.

UW-Oshkosh travels to eighth-ranked UW-Whitewater (13-2, 2-2 WIAC) on Wednesday (Jan. 20).
