Titans Pull Away Early For Easy Win Over Pioneers

Alex Richard led 14 Titan scorers with 12 points as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team never trailed during an 83-51 victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday (Jan. 9) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (10-3, 1-1 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, shot 60 percent (15-25) from the floor in the first half and took a 45-14 lead to intermission. The Titans led by at least 11 points for the last 31:35 of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the game shooting 50.8 percent (30 of 59) from the floor and held significant advantages in rebounds (44-27), assists (20-7) and steals (10-4). The Titans connected on 50 percent (9-18) of its shots from 3-point range and made 14 of 23 (60.9 percent) free throws.

All 17 Titans saw action as UW-Oshkosh, which snapped a three-game losing streak, received 57 points from its reserves.

Richard made 5 of 9 field goal attempts and added five rebounds, while Eliza Campbell, making her second career start, contributed nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

Morgan Kokta had nine points and six rebounds for the Titans, while Emma Melotik, Chloe Pustina and Taylor Schmidt chipped in eight points each.

Schmidt opened the scoring with a 3-pointer less than a minute into the game and gave UW-Oshkosh a 10-2 lead with a layup at the 5:21 mark. UW-Platteville pulled within 10-6 on a jumper by Emma Noel, but the Titans answered with a 21-2 scoring run during an eight-minute stretch to take a 31-8 advantage midway through the second quarter.

UW-Oshkosh shot a remarkable 77.8 percent (7-9) from the field during the first quarter, while UW-Platteville missed 7 of 8 shots and committed seven turnovers during the Titans' decisive scoring run that spanned the first two periods.

The Titans, winners of seven straight games against the Pioneers, opened their largest lead of 35 points when Madeline Staples drained a 3-point shot to make the score 68-33 after three quarters. UW-Oshkosh led by at least 29 points for the remainder of the game.

Morgan Hartman and Morgan Horstman paced UW-Platteville (4-9, 1-1 WIAC) with 10 and eight points, respectively. The Pioneers also received six points, four rebounds and two blocks from Allison Prestegaard.

UW-Oshkosh was limited to 32.7 percent (17-52) shooting from the floor, including 20.8 percent (5-24) during the first half. The Pioneers made 4 of 13 (30.8) 3-point shots and 13 of 18 (72.2 percent) free throws.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won 48 of its last 50 games when holding opponents to 60 points or fewer, plays at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Jan. 13).
