Falcons Stun Titans In WIAC Opener

Richell Mehus had a career-high 30 points to lead UW-River Falls to a 76-69 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team in the conference opener on Wednesday (Jan. 6) in Kolf Sports Center.

Mehus, who eclipsed her previous high of 25 points, made 12 of 18 field goals and added six steals and five rebounds. She scored 22 of her points in the first half and ended the contest shooting 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

UW-River Falls (10-2, 1-0 WIAC) never trailed in snapping a six-game losing streak to the Titans.

The Falcons outrebounded UW-Oshkosh, 42-32, and shot 47.5 percent (29-61) from the field. The Falcons also secured their first win in Oshkosh since Dec. 10, 2011.

UW-River Falls also received 15 points and 10 rebounds from Kate Theisen, and 15 points, six boards and three blocks from Taylor Karge. The UW-River Falls starting lineup accounted for 71 points.

UW-Oshkosh (9-3, 0-1 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, ended the game shooting 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor and 44.1 percent (15-34) from the free throw line.

The Titans held advantages of 21-16 in turnovers and 15-11 in steals. UW-Oshkosh entered the game averaging a division-leading 10.7 turnovers per game.

UW-River Falls scored the first six points of the contest and increased its lead to 18-4 with 4:39 left in the first quarter as the Falcons made seven of their first nine field goal attempts.

UW-Oshkosh tallied the last four points of the opening period to close within 20-12, but UW-River Falls answered with nine consecutive points to start the second quarter for a 29-12 advantage at the 8:18 mark.

The Falcons led by as many as 21 points at 39-18 on a layup by Mehus with 5:02 to play in the second stanza. The Titans ended the half with a 16-5 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Morgan Kokta just before the halftime buzzer that made the score 44-34.

Mehus and Karge combined for 35 points during the first half on 16 of 21 (76.2 percent) shooting from the floor.

UW-Oshkosh trimmed its deficit to six points on four occasions during the third period, but the Falcons entered the final quarter with a 56-49 lead.

UW-River Falls upped its lead to 12 points at 63-51 with 7:37 remaining, but UW-Oshkosh pulled within five at 70-65 at the 1:48 mark. The Titans missed a 3-pointer that would have cut their deficit to two points with 62 seconds to go, and the Falcons converted six straight free throws to preserve the victory.

Eliza Campbell and Taylor Schmidt paced UW-Oshkosh with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Marissa Selner chipped in eight points and a team-leading five rebounds for the Titans, while Ashley Neustifter contributed six points and a game-high four assists and seven steals.

UW-Oshkosh looks to snap its three-game losing streak when it hosts UW-Platteville on Saturday.
