Knights Give Titans First Loss Of Season

Kailey Kladivo had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Wartburg College (Iowa) to a 67-56 women's basketball victory over previously unbeaten UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday (Dec. 29) in Waverly, Iowa.

Katie Sommer added 16 points and seven boards for the Knights, while Morgan Neuendorf chipped in 15 points and five assists off the bench.

UW-Oshkosh (9-1), ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, will play 10th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in Wednesday's (Dec. 30) consolation game of the Wartburg Holiday Tournament. Wartburg College advances to play eighth-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) in the championship game. Wheaton College (8-1) defeated the University of St. Thomas (8-2), 66-58, on Tuesday.

Wartburg College (9-1) upped its winning streak to seven games by shooting 48.8 percent (21-43) from the floor and 74.1 percent (20-27) from the free throw line. The Knights outrebounded the Titans, 43-29.

UW-Oshkosh was held to its lowest field goal percentage (.308) and scoring output of the season. The Titans made just 9 of 33 shots (27.3 percent) from beyond the 3-point line.

Sommer had nine quick points as the Knights raced out to an 11-2 lead. A 3-pointer by Emma Melotik cut UW-Oshkosh's deficit to 15-10, but Kladivo split a pair of free throws to give Wartburg College a 16-10 advantage after the first quarter.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first seven points of the second period to claim its first lead of the game at 17-16 on a 3-pointer by Taylor Schmidt. Another 3-pointer by Schmidt gave the Titans a 20-18 edge, and a three-point play by Alex Richard allowed UW-Oshkosh to reclaim a 23-22 lead with six minutes to go in the second period.

Sommer answered with a 3-pointer seven seconds later, and the Knights held the lead for the final 25:58 of the contest. Consecutive jumpers by Neuendorf capped an eight-point Wartburg College run for a 30-23 advantage midway through the second quarter, and the Knights led, 33-29, at halftime.

UW-Oshkosh pulled to within one point on two occasions during the third period, but Wartburg College closed the quarter with five straight points for a 46-38 lead.

A layup by Richard cut the Titan deficit to five points at 52-47 with just under five minutes left, but the Knights responded with five unanswered points for a 57-47 lead on a 3-pointer by Neuendorf with 3:17 to play.

Wartburg College closed out the victory by converting all 10 of its free throws during the final 93 seconds.

Schmidt hit a career-best five 3-pointers and paced UW-Oshkosh with a season-high 19 points.

Richard contributed seven points for the Titans, while Ashley Neustifter had five points, four assists and four rebounds. Eliza Campbell registered four points, four assists and a team-leading seven rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh won the first three meetings with Wartburg College, but the Knights have won the last two contests over the Titans, including a 70-65 decision during the 2008-09 season.
