Titans Pull Away From Red Hawks In Second Half

Taylor Schmidt had a game-high 11 points and Marissa Selner added 10 points and 14 rebounds as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team defeated Ripon College, 67-36, on Friday (Dec. 18) in Ripon.

The Titans, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, erased a 17-16 deficit midway through the second quarter by scoring 21 of the next 25 points for a 37-21 advantage with four minutes left in the third quarter. UW-Oshkosh went on to lead by at least 12 points for the last 16:26 of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh, which improved its record to 9-0 for the second time in three seasons, shot just 33.3 percent (9-27) from the field during the first half before rebounding to shoot 53.1 percent (17-32) over the final two quarters.

Ripon College, which lost its sixth straight meeting with the Titans, was limited to 30.4 percent (7-23) shooting from the field in the first half and 28 percent (7-25) in the second.

Alex Richard contributed 10 points for UW-Oshkosh while Morgan Kokta and Isabella Samuels chipped in seven apiece.

UW-Oshkosh's Ashley Neustifter registered six points and a game-best six assists while committing one turnover. She went into the game ranked sixth in the country with a 3.56 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Titans got out to a 10-4 lead and held a 14-9 advantage after the first quarter.

The Red Hawks scored the first four points of the second period to pull within 14-13 and took their second and final lead of the game at 17-16 on a pair of free throws by Maddie Koster.

UW-Oshkosh reclaimed the lead for good at 18-17 on a layup by Neustifter with just under five minutes left in the second quarter. The Titans tallied the last four points of the first half and held a 24-19 edge at halftime.

The Titans began the third period by extending their run to 13 unanswered points, including the last seven by Schmidt, to increase their lead to 33-19 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

UW-Oshkosh scored last 14 points of the game, including consecutive 3-pointers by Chloe Pustina and Lauren Peterson that gave UW-Oshkosh a 61-36 advantage with 3:16 left. A layup by Peterson with 26 seconds remaining capped the scoring and provided the Titans with their largest lead of 31 points.

Jonalee Elliott, Nicole Heckert and Megan Jensen paced Ripon College (5-3) with six points each.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the contest ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III by allowing just 44.5 points per game, has held each of its nine opponents to less than 54 points.

The Titans return to action at the Wartburg College Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-30 in Waverly, Iowa. UW-Oshkosh will play host Wartburg College on Dec. 29 and either eighth-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) or 10th-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) on Dec. 30.
