Titans Defeat Belles To Remain Unbeaten

Taylor Schmidt poured in 17 points and Marissa Selner added 11 points and nine rebounds as the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team used a second-half surge to pull away for a 70-51 win over Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on Saturday (Nov. 21) at the Beth Baker Classic in Wheaton, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh, which ended the Beth Baker Classic with a 2-0 record after downing Defiance College (Ohio) by a score of 74-49 on Friday (Nov. 20), held a slim 32-29 advantage at halftime over Saint Mary's College before outscoring the Belles, 38-22, during the second half.

Selner and Schmidt were both named to the five-member all-tournament team, joining Katie McDaniels and Chantal Meacham from host Wheaton College (Ill.) and Kelsey Tietje from Defiance College. Selner ended the two-day tournament with 17 total points and 13 rebounds, while Schmidt tallied 26 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Against Saint Mary's College, Chloe Pustina chipped in eight points for the Titans, who also received seven points apiece from Eliza Campbell and Alex Richard. Campbell pulled down eight rebounds, while Ashley Neustifter registered a team-leading five assists.

UW-Oshkosh (4-0) shot 45.1 percent (23-51) from the field and 63.3 percent (19-30) from the free throw line, while Saint Mary's College was held to 33.9 percent (19-56) shooting from the floor. The Titans also held considerable advantages in rebounds (45-28) and steals (10-4).

Saint Mary's College scored the first points of the game on a layup by Krista Knapke before Morgan Kokta hit a 3-pointer for a 3-2 UW-Oshkosh lead just 30 seconds into the contest.

The Titans maintained the advantage until a layup by the Belle's Kelsey Ronan gave her team a 13-12 edge with 20 seconds left in the first period. Two free throws by Schmidt provided the Titans a 14-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Belles reclaimed a 22-20 advantage on a 3-pointer by Sarah Macius with 4:44 to go in the second period, and two free throws from Eleni Shea extended Saint Mary's College's lead to 27-23 with 2:18 left in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh answered with eight consecutive points to reclaim the lead for good at 31-27. A free throw by Campbell put the Titans ahead, 28-27, and a 3-pointer by Pustina capped the run.

The Titans limited the Belles to just four points during the first seven minutes of the third quarter and held a 43-37 lead entering the fourth period.

Saint Mary's College cut its deficit to 43-38 early in the final quarter, but UW-Oshkosh put the game away with eight unanswered points for a 51-38 lead with eight minutes to play.

The Belles pulled within 53-43 with six minutes to go, but the Titans closed the game with a 17-8 run.

Knapke and Shea led Saint Mary's College (0-3) with 15 points apiece. Shea compiled six assists, while Knapke had a team-leading seven rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, is off until it travels to Viterbo University on Dec. 1.
