Titans Win Inaugural Game With Ravens

Marissa Selner poured in 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team pulled away for a 70-52 win over first-time opponent Anderson University on Sunday (Nov. 15) in Anderson, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0), ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, outrebounded Anderson University, 47-28, including 20-7 on the offensive end. The Titans trailed for just 34 seconds of the contest.

Selner shot 60 percent (6-10) from the field, 83.3 percent (5-6) from the free throw line and collected six offensive rebounds.

Alex Richard added 13 points for the Titans, who also received eight points, six rebounds and four assists from Taylor Schmidt.

UW-Oshkosh's Chloe Pustina tallied nine points, while Isabella Samuels recorded eight points and seven rebounds, and Eliza Campbell snared eight rebounds. Ashley Neustifter chipped in seven points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Titans scored the first six points of the game before the Ravens answered with seven straight to take their only lead of the game at 7-6 with 6:31 left in the first quarter. UW-Oshkosh quickly regained the lead on two free throws by Richards and held an 18-13 advantage at the end of one period.

Anderson University (0-1) pulled within 27-22 with just under four minutes remaining in the first half, but a layup by Samuels and a 3-pointer by Pustina on consecutive possessions pushed the Titan lead back to 10 points at 32-22. A layup by Campbell gave UW-Oshkosh a 36-26 cushion at halftime.

UW-Oshkosh scored 20 of their first-half points in the paint, and nine Titans entered the scoring column during the first two quarters.

The Ravens pulled within nine points on three occasions during the second half, including a 50-41 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

Clinging to a 59-49 lead with five minutes left, the Titans scored nine straight points over the next four minutes to preserve the victory. Neustifter fueled the decisive run with her first 3-pointer of the season at the 4:39 mark, and Schmidt capped the flurry with a layup for a 68-49 advantage with 66 seconds to play.

Anderson University connected on 7 of 17 (41.2 percent) of its 3-pointers and finished the game shooting 37.3 percent (19-51) from the field overall.

Blayr Poston made 4 of 7 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and led Anderson University with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Shelby Shaffer added eight points and four assists for the Ravens, while Courtney Skinner and Shannon Gavaghan contributed seven points apiece.

UW-Oshkosh travels to Wheaton, Ill., for a pair of games next weekend. The Titans play Defiance College (Ohio) on Friday (Nov. 20) and Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on Saturday (Nov. 21).
