Titans Defeat Blue Devils To Regain WIAC Lead

Alex Richard, Taylor Schmidt and Alicia Tollefson all had career-scoring highs to lift the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team to a 94-71 victory over UW-Stout on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

Schmidt tallied 24 points, Richard and Tollefson 17 apiece, and Eliza Campbell 13 in the Titans' fifth straight win over the Blue Devils.

UW-Oshkosh's Morgan Kokta also established a career best with eight assists, while Selner and Richard tied their career highs with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Kokta and Selner both scored eight points.

The Titans scored their most points of the season by shooting 49.3 percent (33-67) from the floor, 84 percent (21-25) from the free throw line and a season-best 53.8 percent (7-13) from behind the 3-point line. UW-Oshkosh outrebounded UW-Stout, 44-30.

UW-Oshkosh (13-2, 5-1 WIAC) reclaimed first place in the conference standings with the win and UW-Superior's 82-77 loss at UW-Platteville. UW-Superior (10-5, 5-2 WIAC) fell one-half game behind the Titans in second place. UW-Stout (4-11, 2-4 WIAC) remained tied for sixth.

The Titans, ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, erased a 6-4 deficit with a 33-10 run for a 37-16 lead with 8:45 to play in the first period. UW-Oshkosh made 11 of 15 shots from the floor and 7 of 8 from the charity stripe during the span of nearly 10 minutes. Tollefson knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 points during game-changing stretch that also featured six points apiece by Richard and Schmidt.

UW-Oshkosh led by as many as 26 points (46-20) with 5:49 left in the first half, but a 13-2 run by UW-Stout trimmed the Titans' lead to 48-33 with 90 second remaining. Two free throws by Schmidt provided the Titans with a 52-35 advantage at the break for UW-Oshkosh's highest scoring first half of the season.

Trailing 55-37 with less than 18 minutes left, UW-Stout converted 6 of 7 shots from the field to pull within 62-50 at the 14:54 mark. UW-Oshkosh responded with a 20-10 run to go up 82-60 and led by at least 20 points for the last 7:19.

UW-Oshkosh equaled its season high of 90 points on a jumper by Schmidt with 2:29 remaining. Lauren Peterson capped the Titans' offense with a layup with 52 seconds left.

UW-Oshkosh scored 86 or more points for the fourth time this season. UW-Stout, which entered the game allowing 69.6 points, ceded 90 or more points for the second time this year.

Jenna Goldsmith and Kyleigh Hebert both had 17 points for UW-Stout. Goldsmith, the WIAC leader in field goal percentage, made 8 of 12 (.667) shots from the field, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and recorded a game-high three blocks. Hebert added a team-best six assists.

UW-Stout, which has lost six of its last seven games, shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the floor, 25 percent (5-20) on 3-point attempts and 87.5 percent (14-16) from the foul line. It was the Blue Devils' third best shooting effort of the season from the field and their second best from the free throw line. UW-Stout entered the game ranked ninth in the WIAC with a .361 field goal percentage and a .602 free throw percentage.

UW-Oshkosh remains at home to face UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 17) in Kolf Sports Center.
