Titans Favored To Capture WIAC Women's Basketball Title

UW-Oshkosh has been picked to claim the 2015 WIAC women's basketball championship, according to a poll conducted by the league's nine head coaches and sports information directors.

UW-Oshkosh, an 11-time WIAC champion, returns four starters and 75.4 percent of its scoring from last year's team that finished second in the league standings with a 13-3 record.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the 2013-14 season with a 26-4 overall record. The Titans were ranked ninth in the final D3hoops.com national poll after winning the WIAC Tournament and advancing to the "Sweet Sixteen" of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Expected to follow UW-Oshkosh in this year's WIAC standings is defending champion UW-Whitewater. UW-Stevens Point is projected to finish third in the listings, UW-Superior fourth, UW-Platteville fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth, UW-Stout seventh, UW-La Crosse eighth and UW-River Falls ninth.

The Titans' most heralded returnees are senior forward Katelyn Kuehl, junior guard Ashley Neustifter and sophomore guard Taylor Schmidt. Kuehl received All-WIAC first-team honors last season after averaging 10.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Schmidt and Neustifter collected All-WIAC honorable mention status last season after averaging 10.2 and 7.4 points per game, respectively.

UW-Whitewater, ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, went unbeaten in 16 WIAC games last season and advanced to the Final Four for the second straight year. The Warhawks return just one starter (Abbie Reeves) from last year's team that compiled a 27-5 record.

"I legitimately believe that six or seven teams could win the WIAC title this year due to the wealth of their experience returning," said UW-Oshkosh head coach Brad Fischer. "The race is wide open, but until someone knocks them off, UW-Whitewater is still the team to beat."

UW-Oshkosh, ranked fifth in the country by D3hoops.com, takes a 3-0 record into Saturday's (Nov. 22) game at Loras College (Iowa). The Titans began the 2014-15 campaign with wins of 86-60 over Hamline University (Minn.), 64-40 over Coe College (Iowa) and 90-44 over Viterbo University. The victories improved UW-Oshkosh's record in its last 59 games to 49-10.

UW-Oshkosh opens its 16-game WIAC schedule at UW-Whitewater on Dec. 3. The Titans' first WIAC home contest is against UW-Platteville on Dec. 10. UW-Oshkosh concludes WIAC play at UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 21.
