Three Titans Earn WIAC All-Centennial Basketball Honors

UW-Oshkosh's Kay Mikolajczak, Holly Spoo and Wendy Wangerin have been named to the WIAC Women's Basketball All-Time Team. The league recognized 15 outstanding players as part of its centennial anniversary celebration.

Mikolajczak (2002-04) is UW-Oshkosh's all-time leader with 127 blocked shots. She also totaled 1,124 points and 643 rebounds. In 2004, Mikolajczak earned the Jostens Trophy, an award recognizing the most outstanding student-athlete in NCAA Division III basketball. Mikolajczak (Frankiin • Franklin High School) helped UW-Oshkosh to a 62-18 record and a share of the 2004 WIAC title. She played the 2001 season at UW-Eau Claire.

Spoo (1996-98) was part of an amazing three-year run that featured the Titans compiling an 80-6 record and winning two WIAC championships. In 1996, UW-Oshkosh went 31-0 and captured the NCAA Division III title. Spoo (New Richmond • New Richmond High School) was named WIAC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American in 1998. After playing the 1995 season at UW-River Falls, Spoo went to UW-Oshkosh and totaled 1,582 career points, the 14th-highest figure in WIAC history.

Wangerin (1993-96) is the only four-time All-WIAC selection in UW-Oshkosh history. In 1996, she was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year after leading the Titans to a 31-0 record and the national championship. Wangerin (Waukesha • Waukesha South High School) helped UW-Oshkosh to a 99-14 record, three NCAA Division III postseason appearances and three WIAC titles. She currently ranks fourth in WIAC history with 1,743 career points.

UW-Eau Claire led the way with five players on the all-time team. The former Blugolds chosen were Jayme Anderson (1999-2000), Kristi Channing (2000-03), Sue Christianson (1987-90), Arlene Meinholz (1992-95) and Erika Schmidt (1994-97).

From UW-Stevens Point, the all-time members included Kari Groshek (1998-2002), Amanda Nechuta (2002-05), Britta Petersen (2007-11) and Sonja Sorenson (1985-88).

The final three selections were UW-Stout's Kelsey Duoss (2005-07), Julia Hirssig (2007-10) and Julie Maki (1990-93).

The WIAC is recognizing the outstanding individuals from the league's 100-year history. All-time teams are being selected in those men's and women's sports that have been classified as "championship" sports at some point since 1913. Additional teams will be released on a weekly basis throughout much of the 2011-12 academic year.

All-time team members will receive certificates from the conference and it is hoped that most, if not all, of the recipients will be in attendance or represented at the WIAC Centennial Banquet in Madison on Aug. 4, 2012.
