Titans Swept By Two-Time Defending WIAC Champion

One run in the sixth inning of both contests propelled two-time defending WIAC champion UW-Whitewater to a doubleheader sweep over the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team on Tuesday (April 13) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater (16-6/4-0 WIAC) took the first contest, 2-1, with a run-scoring double from Jordyn Gaza. The Warhawks then closed out a 5-3 victory over the Titans (9-13/0-4 WIAC) in game two with a solo home run by Lauren Cruz.

UW-Whitewater marked first in the third frame of game one with a run-scoring single by Amanda LeBeau.

After two scoreless innings, UW-Oshkosh knotted the contest in the sixth with a run-scoring single from Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh).

Gaza's double to left field gave the Warhawks the victory in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jessica Stang earned the complete-game win for UW-Whitewater, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) took the loss, yielding two runs and seven hits.

UW-Oshkosh notched three hits in the contest, receiving one apiece from Hart, Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) and Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville). The Warhawks totaled seven hits in game one, led by Gaza and LeBeau with two.

The Titans tallied the first score in the nightcap on a run-scoring single by Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks) in the second frame. The Warhawks tied the contest in the bottom half when Kate McDonnell marked on a bases-loaded walk.

A base hit from Erin Kelly (Fr. • La Crosse) scored Tornow in the fourth frame and gave the Titans a 2-1 advantage. UW-Whitewater knotted the game once again in the bottom of the fourth with a run-scoring double from Courtney Baldwin.

UW-Oshkosh earned a 3-2 cushion with Hart's run-scoring knock to start the fifth inning. The Warhawks gained a 4-3 advantage soon after with a home run blast by Emily Epifanio and Haley Krueger's run-scoring single.

UW-Whitewater added its final tally of the contest in the sixth inning with Cruz's blast to right field. Katie Boyle tossed 4.2 innings for the Warhawks, giving up three runs and six hits. Stacy Bahr earned the victory, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings. Stang recorded the save, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) took the loss for the Titans, allowing 12 hits and four runs in 4.1 innings. Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) pitched the final 1.2 innings for UW-Oshkosh.

The Titans tallied seven hits in game two, led by two each from Tornow and Freimuth. UW-Whitewater marked 14 hits in the contest, receiving two apiece from Baldwin, Cruz, Epifanio and Lauren Rankins.
