Heinzelman Named To Academic All-America Team

Amie Heinzelman (Sr. • Monroe) has been selected to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Heinzelman, an outfielder, was one of 11 players to earn first-team recognition. She becomes just the third student-athlete in UW-Oshkosh softball history to pick up Academic All-America honors and is the first Titan to obtain first-team standing. As a physical education major, Heinzelman owns a 3.97 cumulative grade point average.

On the diamond this season, Heinzelman started 38 games and posted a .387 batting average. She pounded a team-best nine home runs while also marking 13 doubles, three triples, 41 runs scored and 44 RBI. Heinzelman listed second in the WIAC in on-base percentage (.507) and ranked third with an .802 slugging percentage.

After missing all of 2009 with an injury, Heinzelman came out of the gate on fire. Her season-opening doubleheader included seven hits, four home runs, six runs scored and nine runs batted in. During a win over Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), she went 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored, two doubles and three RBI. Heinzelman booked seven RBI on three hits while scoring twice in the Titans' victory against UW-Stevens Point.

Heinzelman increased her batting average by at least 44 points every year and now owns a .332 career mark. She saw action in 128 contests, amassing 15 homers, 34 doubles and seven triples. Heinzelman scored 112 times, drove in 83 runs, stole 13 bases and reached first with a walk 67 times.

A lifeguard and swim lesson teacher, Heinzelman also is an active member of the Wisconsin Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She participates in the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, in addition to being a certified archery instructor.

The WIAC had one other member on the squad, with UW-Whitewater's Amanda LeBeau picking up third-team honors. Heinzelman becomes the 42nd UW-Oshkosh student-athlete to earn the award, with Titans gaining a total of 54 Academic All-America distinctions.
