Titans Trade Victories With Maroons

Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) tallied six hits and two home runs as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Chicago (Ill.) on Sunday (April 11) in Chicago, Ill.

The University of Chicago (16-7-1) rallied to take the first contest, 7-5, using a three-run fifth inning to go ahead late. UW-Oshkosh (9-11) won game two, 6-5, thanks to Tornow's home run blast in the seventh frame.

The Titans marked first in game one, with Tornow smashing a home run her opening trip. Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh) later added a long ball of her own in the second inning for a 2-0 advantage.

The Maroons knotted the contest during the second with a two-run home run by Vicky Tomaka. The University of Chicago earned a 3-2 lead later in the frame when Alison Feibel marked on a UW-Oshkosh error.

The Titans gained a 5-3 advantage in the third inning thanks to a run-scoring single from Tornow and a two-run single by Hart.

Julia Schneider scored on an error, while the Maroons added a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring single from Tomaka to close out the fifth frame. A run-scoring single by Liz Payonk in the seventh inning created the game's final score.

Sarah Neuhaus earned the victory for the University of Chicago, pitching four innings, giving up five runs and striking out five. Melissa Collins pitched the final three innings for the Maroons, giving up two hits. The loss belonged to Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels), who pitched 4.2 innings and allowed six runs. Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) pitched the final 1.1 frames for the Titans.

The Maroons notched seven hits in the contest, led by Tomaka with two. UW-Oshkosh had eight hits in game one, receiving three from Tornow and two from Hart.

UW-Oshkosh started the second contest with a two-run double by Tornow in the first frame. Later on, the Titans took a 3-0 advantage with a run-scoring single from Marti Meyer (So. • Verona).

A two-run homer from Schneider in the third frame and a solo blast by Tomaka in the fourth inning tied the game at 3 for the Maroons.

Lindsey Mikulecky (Fr. • Union Grove) brought in two runs with her base hit to start the fifth frame, giving UW-Oshkosh a 5-3 cushion. In the bottom half, the University of Chicago answered with consecutive home runs from Neuhaus and Schneider to knot the contest. After a scoreless sixth inning, Tornow launched a long ball to start the seventh.

Ashley Kowalewski (So. • Greenfield) started the game for UW-Oshkosh, allowing four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings. Wautier earned the victory for the Titans, throwing 2.2 innings while giving up one run and two hits.

Melissa Collins started the game for the University of Chicago and surrendered three runs before being replaced by Kim Cygan, who gave up two runs in four innings.
Jacqueline Ryan took the loss for the Maroons, tossing two innings and allowing one run. Neuhaus pitched the final frame for the University of Chicago.

UW-Oshkosh marked seven hits in the contest, led by three from Tornow. The Maroons totaled six hits, receiving two from both Tomaka and Schneider.
