Titans Ground Red Hawks

Three different players posted a five-hit day as the UW-Oshkosh women's softball team swept a doubleheader from Ripon College on Thursday (April 15) in Ripon.

The Titans (11-13) scored five runs in the sixth inning to win the first contest, 12-6, and took the second game, 9-1, when Hayley Freimuth (So. • Combined Locks) smashed a run-scoring double in the fifth inning to break open a tie game.

UW-Oshkosh tallied 24 hits on the day, led by five apiece from Lisa Hart (So. • Oshkosh), Whitney Tornow (Sr. • Neenah) and Julia Burns (So. • Verona).

Ripon College (12-13) notched 16 hits during the two games, receiving four by Stephanie Rieuwpassa and two from Jackie Reichhart.

The Red Hawks scored first in game one, using run-scoring hits from Rieuwpassa and Jessica Goudreau, along with a Titans' error, to gain a 4-0 advantage in the second inning.

A run-scoring double from Tornow in the third frame and a home run blast to left field from Burns in the fourth cut the UW-Oshkosh deficit to 4-2. The Titans knotted the game during the fifth inning after Tornow brought in Hart on a run-scoring double and Marti Meyer (So. • Verona) tallied a run-scoring groundout.

Run-scoring tallies from Alli Jensen and Reichhart in the sixth frame regained a 6-4 advantage for Ripon College.

Kelley Koebler (So. • Janesville) smashed a two-run home run to start the sixth frame, while Tornow and Hart later marked on an error by the Red Hawks. Jamie Braden (Jr. • Lake Villa, Ill.) ended the inning with a run-scoring single to give the Titans a 9-6 cushion.

The Titans notched three more runs in the seventh, starting with Burns scoring on a wild pitch. Tornow and Meyer each had a run-scoring knock to create the game's final score.

Courtney Wautier (Fr. • Brussels) earned the complete-game victory for UW-Oshkosh, allowing six runs and 10 hits while striking out five. Brittnee Peotter took the loss for the Red Hawks, giving up nine runs and 11 hits in 5.2 innings. Rieuwpassa pitched the final 1.1 innings, surrendering three runs.

Tornow tallied the first run for UW-Oshkosh in game two, scoring on a wild pitch in the opening frame. Ripon College marked its only run of the contest on a run-scoring single from Abby Richeson during the bottom half of the first.

Freimuth's run-scoring smash and a run-scoring single from Sydnee Wyss (Jr. • Monroe) gave the Titans a 3-1 cushion in the fifth inning.

Meyer began the sixth frame by hitting a run-scoring double, and Burns marked when Braden grounded out. Meyer scored on a wild pitch before Wyss blasted a run-scoring triple to end the inning. The Titans completed the scoring in the seventh when Kaelyn Hogan (Fr. • Greendale) brought in Tornow with a fielder's choice.

Tatum Schultz (Fr. • Oshkosh) earned the complete-game victory for the Titans, allowing one run on six hits. Rieuwpassa took the complete-game loss for the Red Hawks, surrendering nine runs on nine hits, in addition to four walks.
