Titans Finish In Fifth At WIAC Championship

PRESCOTT, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh men's cross country placed fifth at the 2023 WIAC Championships on Saturday (Oct. 28) at Prescott High School, hosted by UW-River Falls.

Ten-time WIAC champions, the Titans totaled 142 points to guide them to their fifth-place finish. The Titans had a fifth-place finish in the 2022 championship and a third-place finish in the 2021 championship.

Paul Proteau (So. • Riverside, Ill.) led Titan runners in the 8,000-meter race, running the course in 25:35 with a 21st-place finish.

Other Titans that contributed to the team points included Joe Kehoe (Sr. • Sun Prairie) with a 28th place finish in 25:48, Jake Krause (Jr. • Hortonville) in 33rd place at 25:51, Cameron Cullen (So. • Kewaunee) in 35th at 25:55 finish, and Dwight Hosni (Jr. • Cedarburg) in 55th at 26:23.

Christian Patzka of UW-Whitewater won the individual title, running the course in 24:20. Ethan Gregg (24:24) and Grant Matthai (24:38), both of UW-La Crosse, followed in second and third. Isaac Wegner (UW-La Crosse), Gunner Schlender (UW-Whitewater), Joey Sullivan (UW-La Crosse) and Adam Loenser (UW-La Crosse) rounded out the All-WIAC First Team finishers.

In the team competition, UW-La Crosse secured its sixth consecutive title with 22 points to make this their 38th overall title. Following behind was UW-Whitewater with 41 points and UW-Stout in third with 117 points. 

Other Titans running in the championship were: Alex Peterson (Fr. • Gillett), Joe Freng (So. • Sun Prairie), Lucas Nicholson (Fr. • Pewaukee), Trent Chadwick (So. • Poynette), Jason Ford (Sr. • Verona), Owen Bostwick (So. • Whitefish Bay), and Jason Skinkis (Fr. • Seymour). Peterson finished in 26:33 for 61st, Freng in 69th in 26:49, Nicholson placed 75th in 27:03, Chadwick in 77th in 27:08, Ford in 27:14 for 80th, Bostwick in 87th at 27:59 and Skinkis in 88th at 28:14.

Kehoe was also named to the All-Sportsmanship team award at the event.

Titans will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 11 participating in the NCAA Division III North Regional, which will be hosted by UW-Eau Claire at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. The men's race is set to start at 11 a.m. followed by the women's race at noon.
