Carpenter Named WIAC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

UW-Oshkosh's Jordan Carpenter has been named the 2015 recipient of the WIAC Max Sparger Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Award.

Sponsored by Badgerland Financial, Carpenter becomes the eighth Titan to win the award. UW-Oshkosh's list of previous winners includes two-time honoree Dave Lambert (1990 & 1991) and Eamon McKenna (2002), the current head men's & women's cross country coach of the Titans.

Carpenter, a senior from Ashwaubenon, finished fifth among 92 runners at last Saturday's (Oct. 31) WIAC Championship held at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne. He also placed third at the league meet in 2014 and 17th in 2013.

In NCAA Division III competition, Carpenter is a three-time national meet qualifier. He placed 45th in the nation in 2014, 108th in 2013 and 264th in 2011.

Carpenter majored in economics and completed his undergraduate work with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average in December of 2014. He currently is pursuing a master's degree in business administration.

A Summa Cum Laude honoree, Carpenter is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been recognized on UW-Oshkosh's Dean's List every semester. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and has served as president of UW-Oshkosh's Optimist Club. Carpenter has also worked as a graduate assistant and campus tutor.

In 2014, Carpenter received the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship for having the highest grade point average of any participant. Last spring, he was named to the 2015 Men's Cross Country/Track & Field Academic All-America® Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Also nominated for this year's conference award were UW-Eau Claire's Ryan Mugan, UW-La Crosse's Tom Linner, UW-Stout's Anthony Cass and UW-Whitewater's Kent Miehe.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93.
