Titans Place Seventh At WIAC Championship
The UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team finished seventh with
196 points at the WIAC Championship held Saturday (Oct. 31) in
Whitewater.
UW-La Crosse, which owned five of the top nine individual
performers, totaled 26 points to capture its 30th WIAC team title.
UW-Platteville and defending champion UW-Stevens Point shared
second place in the nine-team meet with 64 points.
UW-Whitewater finished fourth in the team standings with 97
points, while UW-Eau Claire placed fifth with 135, UW-River Falls
sixth with 192, UW-Stout eighth with 208 and UW-Superior ninth with
241.
UW-La Crosse entered the meet ranked third in the NCAA Division
III by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association, UW-Stevens Point fifth, UW-Platteville 11th,
UW-Oshkosh 18th, UW-Whitewater 25th and UW-Eau Claire 30th.
Freshman Zach Wilhelmy of UW-La Crosse won the individual title,
completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:28. The Eagles
also had Paul Moran finish fourth in 25:50, Connor Lonning fifth in
25:53, Dallas Vincent seventh in 25:59 and Scott Hayden ninth in
26:02.
UW-Platteville had a pair of top eight runners as Jason Garvens
finished second in 25:34 and Tony Kilburg eighth in 26:01.
UW-Stevens Point had Joel Heroux finish third in 25:46 and Brandon
Dworak 10th in 26:04, while UW-Whitewater had Dan Machmueller place
sixth in 25:55.
UW-Oshkosh earned its team score on the individual finishes of
Nate Stymiest (So. • Oconto Falls), John Dewitt (Fr. •
Oshkosh), Josh Hoff (Sr. • Boyceville), Mike Jarchow (So.
• Oshkosh) and Ben Wizner (Sr. • Onalaska). Stymiest
placed 30th in 26:35, Dewitt 35th in 26:41, Hoff 44th in 26:50,
Jarchow 55th in 27:18 and Wizner 60th in 27:28.
The Titans also had Mark Allen (Fr. • Port Washington) finish
69th in 27:46, Justin Darrow (Sr. • Sobieski) 71st in 27:52,
William Koepp (Jr. • Lake Nebagamon) 77th in 28:05, Andrew Vos
(Jr. • Fort Atkinson) 88th in 28:40, Jordan King (Fr. •
Stevens Point) 89th in 28:43 and Jeff Baudry (Sr. • Oakfield)
95th in 29:08. A total of 99 runners crossed the finish line.
The WIAC named UW-River Falls' Chad Ernst as the winner of its Max
Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
The league also selected Josh Wieland of UW-Eau Claire, Moran of
UW-La Crosse, Hoff of UW-Oshkosh, Greg Alleman of UW-Platteville,
Scott Degner of UW-River Falls, Brian Finnel of UW-Stevens Point,
Joey Merrill of UW-Stout, Taylor Gombos of UW-Superior and Kyle
O'Rourke of UW-Whitewater to its All-Sportsmanship Team.
UW-Oshkosh returns to action on Nov. 14 when it hosts the NCAA
Division III Midwest Regional at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in
Winneconne. The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for
Nov. 21 in Highland Hills, Ohio.
