Stymiest Competes At NCAA Championship
UW-Oshkosh's Nate Stymiest (So. • Oconto Falls) ran to a
209th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country
Championship held Saturday (Nov. 21) at the Highland Park Golf
Course in Highland Hills, Ohio.
Stymiest, who was UW-Oshkosh's lone representative at the national
meet, completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27:40. He
finished 59th at last year's championship held in Hanover, Ind.
Stymiest earned his trip to the Buckeye State after placing 11th
at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional held Nov. 14 at the Lake
Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.
Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg College (Va.) won this year's national
race with a time of 25:09, while Michael Spain of North Central
College (Ill.) finished second in 25:32, Edgar Kosgey of Williams
College (Mass.) third in 25:34, Dan Ramsey of St. Lawrence
University (N.Y.) fourth in 25:35 and Jason Garvens of
UW-Platteville fifth in 25:36. A total of 276 runners crossed the
finish line.
North Central College scored 50 points to capture its 13th NCAA
Division III title, but its first in 10 years. Williams College
finished second in the team standings with 181 points, while
Allegheny College (Pa.) placed third with 195, New York University
fourth with 224 and defending champion State University of New
York-Cortland fifth with 232. North Central College's margin of
victory (131 points) was the largest in the 37-year history of the
NCAA Division III Championship.
UW-Oshkosh has been represented at the NCAA Division III
Championship 26 times. The Titans sent full squads to the meet 19
times, with first-place finishes coming in 1988, 1989, 1990 and
2002.
