Titans Finish 11th At NCAA Midwest Regional

Nate Stymiest (So. • Oconto Falls) finished 11th to lead all UW-Oshkosh runners at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 14) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.

Stymiest, who placed 42nd in last year's meet, completed this year's 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:50. The performance is expected to earn Stymiest an automatic bid to next Saturday's (Nov. 21) NCAA Division III Championship in Highland Hills, Ohio. Team and individual selections to the national meet will be announced on Sunday (Nov. 15).

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the regional ranked 28th in the NCAA Division III by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, placed 11th in the team standings with 337 points.

Top-ranked North Central College (Ill.) scored 21 points to successfully defend its regional crown. The Cardinals, who recorded the lowest point total in the meet's 32-year history, have won 22 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional titles. Second-ranked UW-La Crosse finished second among the 39 teams with 105 points and Washington University (Mo.) third with 118.

Rounding out the top 10 teams were fourth-place UW-Platteville with 124 points, fifth-place UW-Eau Claire with 169, sixth-place UW-Stevens Point with 173, seventh-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 175, eighth-place UW-Whitewater with 181, ninth-place UW-River Falls with 300 and 10th-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 330. UW-Platteville was ranked eighth in the country, UW-Eau Claire 25th, UW-Stevens Point fifth, Augustana College 11th and UW-Whitewater 20th.

In addition to Stymiest, UW-Oshkosh received team scoring from Josh Hoff (Sr. • Boyceville), Mark Allen (Fr. • Port Washington), Ben Wizner (Sr. • Onalaska) and John Dewitt (Fr. • Oshkosh). Hoff placed 48th with a time of 25:37, while Allen finished 62nd in 25:57, Wizner 106th in 26:41 and Dewitt 110th in 26:43.

The Titans also had Dusty Dorshorst (Sr. • Poynette) finish 122nd in 26:53 and Mike Jarchow (So. • Oshkosh) 142nd in 27:12.

North Central College owned five of the top seven individual finishers, including Michael Spain who won the race with a time of 24:17. The Cardinals also had Ryan Carrigan place second in 24:23, Neal Klein fifth in 24:33, Kyle Brady sixth in 24:35 and Nathaniel Hird seventh in 24:41. UW-La Crosse had two top-10 runners as Connor Lonning finished fourth in 24:29 and Paul Moran 10th in 24:46. Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville placed third in 24:25, Chris Zook of Augustana College eighth in 24:42 and Christopher Wirtz of UW-Eau Claire ninth in 24:45. A total of 282 runners finished the race.
