Titans Lose Season-Opening Match To Norse

Kyle Appel won at both No. 1 singles and doubles to lead Luther College to a 9-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Appleton.

Appel helped spoil UW-Oshkosh's season opener by posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vincent Gorski. Appel also teamed with Trent Schneider to mark an 8-3 victory over Gorski and Ryan Kuzmanovic.

Schneider earned an impressive win at No. 2 singles for the Norse by taking all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Adam Martin.

UW-Oshkosh (0-1) received strong efforts from David Leffler in the fourth and Logan Zastrow in the fifth flights of singles play. Leffler lost a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Brian Murman while Zastrow suffered a 6-2, 6-4 setback to Sam Buffington.

Luther College (1-0), the runner-up in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference a year ago, concluded its list of individual winners with Anders Jensen and Cam Long. Jensen defeated Adam Hawley, 6-1, 6-2, in the third flight, while Long ousted Austin Laumb, 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth.

The Titans' No. 3 doubles squad of Leffler and William O'Connell lost a narrow 8-6 decision to Isaiah Mayerchak and Jake Smith.

Luther College's remaining victory was at No. 2 doubles, where Jensen and Murman defeated Hawley and Martin, 8-5.

UW-Oshkosh will play Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Sunday (Feb. 7) at the Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac.
