Lieder Paces Titans During Season Debut With Pointers

Jarrett Lieder won two events and swam on a first-place relay as the UW-Oshkosh men's swimming & diving team returned to the pool for the first time in nearly a year during its 2021 season-opening dual meet with UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Albee Hall.

The non-scoring meet with the Pointers was the Titans' first activity since the novel coronavirus pandemic canceled the remaining portion of the 2020 season after last February's WIAC Championship.

Lieder paced UW-Oshkosh on Saturday by winning freestyle races at 500 and 1,000 yards with times of 4:52.74 and 10:07.82, respectively. The 2020 WIAC 500-yard freestyle champion also helped teammates Andrew Copeland, Brennan Hoem and Josiah Vandenberg register a first-place time of 3:20.44 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Vandenberg also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.74 and third in the 100-yard butterfly at 55.02 seconds while Copeland placed third in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:57.87 and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at 54.65.

UW-Oshkosh's Alex Jernberg recorded a pair of second-place finishes with his swims of 1:03.82 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 10:15.77 in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Jernberg rallied in the final leg of the 1,000-yard freestyle to nip UW-Stevens Point's Ethan Otto by less than one-tenth of a second for second place.

David Bain and Cody Else also contributed a pair of top-four swims. Bain finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.86 seconds and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:20.44 while Else placed third in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:35.05 and fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 11:30.83.

Other fourth-place results had Titans' Jarod Falk and Matt Holst register times of 2:21.74 in the 200-yard freestyle and 1:11.20 in the 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh's quartet of Bain, Else, Hoem and Holst finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.20.

UW-Stevens Point, the 21-time defending WIAC champion, owned the first-place finisher in 10 of the 13 events, including two individual victories apiece from Kody Hellenbrand (100-yard butterfly and 200-yard freestyle) and Payton Kilian (50- and 100-yard freestyle).

UW-Oshkosh returns to Albee Hall next Saturday (Feb. 13) to host UW-La Crosse.
