Norse Wins Defensive Battle With Titans

Luther College (Iowa) scored in the 16th minute and played stingy defense the rest of the way as it defeated the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team, 1-0, on Wednesday (Oct. 21) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Josh Galvin recorded the decisive goal for the Norse by finishing off a cross from Josh Parris with a 5-yard kick at the 15:04 mark of the contest. The goal was Galvin's second of the season.

Luther College (9-4-3) limited UW-Oshkosh (10-3-2) to just three shots on goal and 12 attempts overall. The Norse, who posted a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, totaled 11 shots, including seven on goal.

The Titans earned all three of their shots on goal in the opening period. Following team saves on shots attempted by UW-Oshkosh's Nick Gonzales in the 27th minute and Michael Dugan in the 39th, Luther College goalkeeper Tommy Breen blocked a shot fired by Jonathan Stanley in the 43rd.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska registered all five of his saves in the last 17 minutes of the match. He blocked shots attempted by Aaron Fargo in the 73rd minute, Parris in the 80th, Natty Maynard in the 86th and 87th, and Galvin the 90th. The Titans also notched a team save on a shot launched by Parris in the 25th minute.

Dugan led the Titans with four shots, while Gonzales and Stanley tallied two apiece. Galvin, Maynard, Parris and Matheus Beato all paced the Norse with two shots each.

This was the 10th meeting between the teams, but the first since UW-Oshkosh suffered a 2-1 loss to Luther College during the second round of the 2001 NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh plays its final home match of the 2015 season on Saturday (Oct. 24) against fifth-ranked UW-Whitewater (14-2).
