Titans Win Defensive Battle With California Guest

Nick Gonzales scored in the 76th minute as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team won a hard-fought 1-0 match over Chapman University (Calif.) on Sunday (Sept. 13) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The contest was the second between the teams, with UW-Oshkosh also winning a 1-0 decision over the Panthers in a 2013 match held in Orange, Calif.

Gonzales tallied his match-winning score on a low 10-yard kick at the 75:31 mark of the contest. His first goal of the season followed a pass from Jacob Hernandez.  

The game's first shot on goal belonged to Chapman University (2-2-2) during the 29th minute of play. It was the only shot attempted by the Panthers in the opening period.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1-1) had three shots on goal in the first half and appeared to have scored in the 35th minute, but the goal was wiped away by an offside call.

Chapman University nearly scored early in the second half, but Connor Tobia's shot hit the crossbar in the 54th minute.

After the goal by Gonzales, Chapman University had two more legitimate opportunities to even the score.

The first chance came in the 85th minute when Boston Kimmel's shot at the near post was saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Sam Gabrilska. Kimmel had another scoring opportunity in the closing seconds, but his shot hit the crossbar with four ticks left on the clock. The Panthers earned a corner kick on Kimmel's shot, but they were unable to get the ball in play before the final whistle blew.

UW-Oshkosh recorded advantages of 11-6 in shots and 5-3 in both shots on goal and corner kicks. Hernandez, Michael Dugan, Elias Efthimiou and Jonathan Stanley led the Titans with two shots each. Kimmel had a team-high three shots for the Panthers.

Gabrilska played the entire match in goal for UW-Oshkosh and counted three saves. Chapman University played two goalkeepers, with Sean Augustine stopping three shots in the first half and Nick Berardi one in the second.

UW-Oshkosh, which hasn't allowed a goal in its last 392 minutes played, will host Milwaukee School of Engineering on Wednesday (Sept. 16) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
