Former Titan To Lead UW-Milwaukee Women's Soccer Program

Former UW-Oshkosh men's soccer player Greg Henschel was named Tuesday (Jan. 24) as the new head women's soccer coach at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I UW-Milwaukee.

Henschel goes to UW-Milwaukee from UW-Whitewater, where he led both the men's and women's soccer teams to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles and appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship this past fall.

Henschel has been in charge of both the men's and women's programs at UW-Whitewater since 1999, leading the two squads to a combined 290 victories and 11 NCAA Division III postseason berths. He replaces Michael Moynihan, who left UW-Milwaukee in December to become the head women's soccer coach at NCAA Division I Northwestern University (Ill.).

Henschel capped his tenure at UW-Whitewater with a record-setting season in 2011. The team set school records for wins (14) and winning percentage (.705). Henschel was named the WIAC Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to the WIAC title and a spot in the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Division III Championship. Henschel, who also led UW-Whitewater to the 2010 WIAC title, collected 126 victories while in charge of the women's program.

On the men's side, Henschel tallied 164 wins and led the Warhawks to 10 NCAA Division III postseason appearances. His squads reached the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA tournament four times. The Warhawks won the WIAC title each of the last three years, the first three years the league has determined a men's soccer champion. Henschel is a two-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree.

Henschel's background includes assistant coaching positions at both UW-Oshkosh and Thomas College (Georgia).

Henschel played soccer at UW-Oshkosh from 1991-94. Upon graduation in 1996, the two-time NCAA Division III all-region selection held school records for goals in a season, goals for a career and total points. Henschel's UW-Oshkosh teams compiled a 61-11-7 record and qualified for NCAA Division III postseason play three times. In 1994, the Titans compiled an 18-0-3 record and advanced to the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship. Henschel, a graduate of Brookfield East High School, also played professionally with the Rockford (Ill.) Raptors of the A-League and the Tallahassee (Fla.) Scorpions of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.

Henschel takes over a UW-Milwaukee team that won a school-record 19 matches and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I Championship this past fall. Led by nine all-conference honorees, including the Horizon League Player of the Year, Defensive Co-Player of the Year and an All-American, the Panthers finished the season ranked 23rd in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). UW-Milwaukee has won the past 12 Horizon League championships.
