O'Brien Receives WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award

UW-Oshkosh's Garrett O'Brien (Sr. • Shoreview, Minn.) has been chosen as the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Soccer recipient of the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

O'Brien carries a 3.68 grade point average and is majoring in marketing and supply chain operations management. He is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been recognized on the UW-Oshkosh Dean's List numerous semesters, including Honor Roll status on two occasions. O'Brien has also earned a pair of academic scholarships.

A first-team All-WIAC selection this year, O'Brien (forward) topped the Titans with five goals and 11 points. He led his squad to victories by scoring two goals against both Finlandia University (Mich.) and St. Norbert College. In his 42-game career, O'Brien compiled 11 goals and six assists for 28 points.

O'Brien was a member of the 2010 UW-Oshkosh team that went 20-1-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four. During the 2009 campaign, he posted four goals and four assists in 10 games.

Outside of athletics, O'Brien is a member of the Oshkosh APICS chapter and UW-Oshkosh's Student Marketing Organization.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference from 1971-1993.

In order to be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
