Titans Begin Defense Of WIAC Title With Shutout Victory

Daniel Fisher's (Fr. • Middleton) first collegiate goal was a match winner as UW-Oshkosh opened defense of last year's WIAC men's soccer title with a 2-0 victory over UW-Superior on Saturday (Sept. 17) in Duluth, Minn.

Fisher broke a scoreless battle with an assisted goal by Chris Kurth (So. • Green Bay) and Ryan Redmond (So. • Lake Elmo, Minn.) in the 40th minute (39:17) of play. Fisher's goal came on his only shot of the match.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1-1/1-0 WIAC) held its one-goal lead until Tony Starnes (Jr. • Green Bay) scored off a pass from Tim Stadler (Sr. • Wauwatosa) in the 57th minute (56:43) of action. The goal for Starnes was his team-leading third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike (Sr. • Wauwatosa) earned his 16th career shutout by saving three shots. UW-Superior goalkeeper Nick Osborn stopped three shots while allowing both UW-Oshkosh goals.

UW-Oshkosh finished the game with 15 shots and three corner kicks. The Titans were led by the three shots of Starnes and the two of both Kurth and Evan Maly (Sr. • Neenah).

UW-Superior (3-2/0-1 WIAC) concluded the contest with eight shots, including six in the second half, and one corner kick. Logan George and Alberto Rivero paced the Yellowjackets with two shots each.

UW-Oshkosh remains on the road for a Sunday (Sept. 18) match at Finlandia University (Mich.).
