Pioneers Fend Off Titans

Cole Aschenbrenner's first-half goal stood up as UW-Platteville held on for a 1-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team on Saturday (Oct. 8) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Aschenbrenner provided the Pioneers' winning margin when he scored off a corner kick from Brandon Chmiel in the game's 28th minute (27:07). Aschenbrenner's first goal of the season came on his only shot of the contest.

UW-Platteville (7-7-1/2-2 WIAC) protected its slim lead on the play of goalkeeper Jared Kuehl. Kuehl recorded nine saves, including eight in the second half when UW-Oshkosh (5-4-2/2-2 WIAC) attempted 12 shots.

The Titans totaled 15 shots for the match, with Tony Starnes (Jr. • Green Bay) owning four and Evan Maly (Sr. • Neenah) and Tim Stadler (Sr. • Wauwatosa) three each.

UW-Platteville launched all eight of its shots in the first half, including two by Richard Rowell. The Pioneers had two of their shots saved by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper James Pike (Sr. • Wauwatosa).

The contest featured two shots that were inches away from scoring. UW-Platteville's Mike Presser had a shot hit the vertical post in the 38th minute of play, while UW-Oshkosh's Ryan Hanna (So. • Verona) had a shot hit the crossbar in the 78th.

UW-Oshkosh is back in action on Sunday (Oct. 9) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium against The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.).
