Titans Overwhelm Rams

The UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team erupted for seven first-half goals as it rolled to a 9-0 victory over Cornell College (Iowa) on Sunday (Sept. 12) in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (5-0-1) totaled 30 shots and five corner kicks against its first-time opponent. The Titans had seven players score goals and four contribute with an assist.

Tim Stadler (Jr. • Wauwatosa) scored three goals to pace UW-Oshkosh's offensive explosion, including a penalty kick that gave the Titans a 1-0 lead just 72 seconds into play.

Stadler then put UW-Oshkosh ahead 2-0 on an assisted goal by Robby Giljohann (Jr. • Pewaukee) in the 18th minute (17:03) and 6-0 on an unassisted goal in the 37th (36:17). Stadler's last goal against the Rams was his team-leading sixth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh took a 3-0 lead when Mike Franzen (Sr. • Sussex) scored on a pass from Tony Starnes (So. • Green Bay) in the 26th minute (25:32). Starnes also picked up an assist on Giljohann's goal that gave the Titans a 5-0 advantage in the 31st minute (30:51).

The Titans scored two more times in the first half on goals by Jesse Klein (Jr. • Burnsville, Minn.) in the 29th minute (28:42) and Evan Maly (Jr. • Neenah) in the 41st (40:45). Devon Prideaux (Sr. • Eden Prairie, Minn.) was credited with an assist on the goal by Maly.

Billy Cameron (Fr. • New Berlin) opened the scoring for UW-Oshkosh in the second half with his assisted goal by Ryan Hanna (Fr. • Verona) in the 65th minute (64:13). The Titans made it a nine-goal advantage on Nick Laubenstein's (Fr. • Howard) unassisted score in the 71st minute (70:47).

A total of 13 players attempted shots for UW-Oshkosh, including Giljohann who launched five and Hanna and Stadler who fired four each. Cornell College was limited to just four shots, all by Kobina Essandoh. The Titans posted a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh had three players protect its goal as James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa) appeared in the match for 37:25, Tim Gindville (Sr. • New Lenox, Ill.) for 39:54 and Joey Wedderspoon (Fr. • Verona) for 12:41. The trio combined for two saves as Pike and Gindville tallied one each.

Cornell College goalkeepers Ben Alleva and Jordan Setser combined for 15 saves. Alleva allowed seven goals and saved eight shots in 53:16, while Setser yielded two goals and blocked seven shots in 36:44.

UW-Oshkosh plays UW-Platteville on Thursday (Sept. 16) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in its WIAC opener.
