Titans, Red Men Play To A Stalemate

Despite owning a 25-8 advantage in shots, the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team had to battle back to earn a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Carthage College on Sunday (Sept. 5) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (2-0-1) trailed 1-0 before Jesse Klein (Jr. • Burnsville, Minn.) scored on a 10-yard kick with 8:37 left in regulation. His boot from the right side of the goal was assisted by Brian Miller (Sr. • Chippewa Falls).

Carthage College (1-1-1) broke a scoreless debate when Tyler Cortez headed a free kick from Cesar Castanon-Yanez into the goal at the 40:08 mark of the match.

Overtime play went relatively quiet as UW-Oshkosh launched all three shots of the two 10-minute periods. Both sessions went without a corner kick.

Goalkeeper Aaron Dirck had a superb match for Carthage College. He recorded 12 saves, including 10 on the 16 shots fired by UW-Oshkosh in the second half. The Titans' James Pike (Jr. • Wauwatosa) totaled two saves, with both of them coming in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh, which was playing Carthage College for the first time since the 1998 season, was led by the five shots of Tim Stadler (Jr. • Wauwatosa). The Titans also received four shots from both Miller and Robby Giljohann (Jr. • Pewaukee).

The Red Men had seven players attempt shots, including two by Greg Pignataro.

UW-Oshkosh concludes its four-game homestand by hosting Clarke College (Iowa) on Wednesday (Sept. 8) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
