Titans Fall To Stout On The Road

MENOMONIE, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh men's basketball was defeated 54-85 on the road Saturday (Jan. 27) at UW-Stout.

Oshkosh (9-10, 2-6 WIAC) shot 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the line over the Blue Devils' mark of  66.7 percent (12-of-18). The Titans also shot 33.9 precent (19-of-56) from the field and 20.0 percent (three-of-15) from three. The Blue Devils (9-10, 4-4 WIAC) shot 50 percent (34-of-68) from the field and 35.7 percent (five-of-14) from three.

Tristan Johanknecht (Fr. • Oshkosh) scored 18 points for the Titans, shooting seven-of-12 from the field and four-of-seven from the line. He also recorded eight rebounds, four being offensive. Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Fr. • Shawano/Waukesha) registered eight points and led the team with 10 rebounds. Reed Gunnink (Sr. • Brandon) also collected eight rebounds for the Titans.

UW-Stout gained an early two-point lead in the first before Metcalf-Grassman tied the score with a jump shot. Carter Thomas (So. • Neenah) then captured the lead for the Titans with a made three-pointer. The Blue Devils came back with a four-point run to gain back the lead before Johanknecht scored off a layup. The score remained 7-6 from 15:55 to 14:00 until Brody Fox score a free throw to tie up the score. Johanknecht then came back for another layup with an assist from Metcalf-Grassman to hook the lead for the Titans. A jump shot from Carson Leuzinger again tied the game up before Metcalf-Grassman scored a layup for an 11-9 lead. The teams continued to trade points before the Titans went on a five-point spurt to secure a four-point lead. A jump shot from Fox shortened the lead to two but was followed by two made free throws from Thomas to retain a four-point edge. The teams went back and forth until Stout tied it up at 22-22 with a layup. Will Mahoney (Sr. • Appleton) recorded with two free throws to capture the lead again before Collin Vick tied it again with a layup. A free throw from Fox secured Stout a one point lead. Stout went on 15-point run to own a 45-28 lead over the Titans before Mahoney ended the half with two made free throws.

The second half started with two made free throws from each team and they continued to trade points throughout most of the half, while the Blue Devils held a lead of at least 20 points over the Titans. Oshkosh was unable to overcome the deficit and ended the game on a made layup from Nick Kraftzenk (Fr. • Kimberly) for his first career points as a Titan.

The Titans will return home Wednesday (Jan. 31) to face off against UW-Whitewater. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Kolf Sports Center.
