Titans Hang In With Nationally Ranked Pioneers

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team hosted No. 16 nationally ranked UW-Platteville on Wednesday night (Jan. 10) and led as late as 10:00 in the second half in a 77-66 loss at the Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans (7-7, 0-3 WIAC) shot a 90.9 percent clip (10-of-11) from the line while going 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, including 33.3 percent (eight-of-24) from three. Thirty of their 66 points came in the paint and 16 came off the bench.

Carter Thomas (So. • Neenah) led all scorers with 17 points, shooting six-of-11 from the field and five-of-nine from three. Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Fr. • Shawano/Waukesha) also reached double-digit points (13) while recording seven rebounds. Three Titans registered two assists.

Oshkosh took its first lead at 5-2 after Matt Imig (So. • Ashwaubenon) converted a three-point attempt early in the first half and Quinn Steckbauer (Sr. • Merrill) kept the Titans ahead with a jump shot after the Pioneers tied it back up. An eight-point spurt for Platteville forced an Oshkosh timeout with 15 minutes to go in the half. After the timeout, the Titans pulled back within three points before a 7-0 run for the Pioneers that was capped off by a three increased the deficit to 10 points. Imig, Will Mahoney (Sr. • Appleton) and Thomas combined for seven points from 5:21 to 1:40, making the score 30-26 by the end of the rally. Reed Seckar (So. • Oshkosh) and Platteville traded two-point shots to close out the first half with the score sitting at 32-28.

UW-Oshkosh fought back from an early six-point deficit in the second half to take the lead for the first time in 27 minutes at 49-48 after Steckbauer followed Riley Rindfleisch's (Fr. • Milwaukee) jump shot with a three-pointer. Metcalf-Grassman kept the score tied after the Pioneers responded by making a layup at 9:30. Another 7-0 Platteville spurt separated the teams for the final time. Oshkosh was held to a longest run of three points the rest of the way while the Pioneers recorded multiple short spurts, extending their lead to 11 points by the end of the game.

The Titans travel to River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 13) with an 11-game regular season winning streak over the Falcons for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
