Titans Hunt Down Beavers

OSHKOSH, Wis.- UW-Oshkosh men's basketball secured a 76-71 victory over Babson College in the second day of BSN Winter Classic at the Oshkosh Arena on Saturday (Dec. 30).

The Titans (7-4) shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, 23.5 percent (four-of-17) from three and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the line, leading the Beavers (5-6, 1-1 NEWMAC) in field goal percentage. They also paced Babson in assists (9-7), bench points (19-14), and points in the paint (44-30).

Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Fr. • Shawano/Waukesha) led with 16 points and seven rebounds (four offensive). Quinn Steckbauer (Sr. • Merrill) had 13 points for the Titans and four rebounds. Will Mahoney (Sr. • Appleton) and Carter Thomas (So. • Neenah) also reaches double-digit points with 11 and 10, respectively. Riley Rindfleisch (Fr. • Milwaukee) scored nine points in his first collegiate appearance.

The Beavers score the first points of the game on a layup and three pointer before Metcalf-Grassman put the Titans on the board with a layup. Babson held the edge, leading by as much as eight points as late as 11:34. Oshkosh went on a 12-point run to take the lead. The teams traded points for the rest of the half and Nate Amado cut the deficit down to two points on a last second three-pointer.

Oshkosh retained a small lead before Mahoney and Rindfleisch scored seven points to separate the Titans from the Beavers. A Jay Dalton (Fr. • Fond Du Lac) dunk gave Oshkosh its largest lead of the night with 11 points with 13 minutes to go. Mark Woolhouse tied the game up at 64-64 with 5:09 left in the game and the Titans responded with an 8-0 spurt. Babson got within four points but could not overcome deficit.  

Mahoney was named to the All-Classic team on Saturday night. 

Titans return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 3) traveling to UW-Whitewater. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Whitewater.
