Green Knights Edge Out Titans

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The St. Norbert College Green Knights kept the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team at bay with a 59-57 result at the Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday night (Dec. 20).

The Titans (6-3) led the Green Knights (8-2, 4-1 NACC) in free throw shooting percentage (84.6-72.7), however St. Norbert held the edge in field goal percentage (38.2-37.3) and three-point field goal percentage (52.9-32.0). The teams were tied up with 11 assists, 14 turnovers, eight second chance points and 22 points in the paint while the Green Knights pulled down 36 rebounds to the Titans' 30 and Oshkosh scored 22 off the bench to St. Norbert's nine.

Reed Gunnink (Sr. • Brandon) and Carter Thomas (So. • Neenah) each scored a team-high 12 points in the contest. Gunnink went four-for-six from the field and two-for-two from both three and the line while Thomas shot two-for-nine from the field, two-for-seven from three and six-for-six from the line. Gunnink added three rebounds, three assists and three blocks to his line as well. Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Fr. • Shawano/Waukesha) paced Oshkosh with six rebounds (two offensive) and Reed Seckar (So. • Oshkosh) scored eight points off the bench.

St. Norbert made a three for the first points of the game and extended its early lead to six points after Quinn Steckbauer (Sr. • Merrill) responded with a layup. Oshkosh went on a seven-point tear capped off with a Seckar three, taking the lead back at 14:56. The Green Knights pushed back and led by as much as eight points which the Titans answered by decreasing the deficit to just two on back-to-back threes from Will Mahoney (Sr. • Appleton) and Matt Imig (So. • Ashwaubenon) but St. Norbert once again grabbed a larger lead, not allowing UW-Oshkosh within seven points before the halftime buzzer sounded with the score at 38-23.

Gunnink kicked off a 6-0 spurt at 14:24 in the second half that got Oshkosh within 11, connecting on a three. The Titans held the Green Knights to just seven points, while scoring 17 of their own for seven minutes in the middle of the half, climbing to just seven points down with 7:29 remaining. Oshkosh fought to a one possession gap three times in the final four minutes of play; on a Metcalf-Grassman layup (56-53), a Gunnink layup (57-55) and two Thomas free throws (59-57) and Gunnink took the ball down the court on a St. Norbert turnover with three seconds to go, but couldn't find the basket on a last second shot on a layup.

The Titans return to action on Dec. 29, facing Nebraska Wesleyan University at the Oshkosh Arena in the BSN Winter Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. They play the following day (Dec. 30) at 5:00 p.m. against Babson College (Mass.).
