Titans Fall In Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Wash.- The UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team fell to host Whitman College (Wash.) in Walla Walla, Wash. on Saturday (Dec. 9), by a score of 68-60.

The No. 24 nationally ranked Titans (5-2) shot an uncharacteristic 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field, 29.2 percent (seven-of-24) from three and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the line. The Blues (6-3, 1-1 NWC) outrebounded the Titans 35-23 and recorded 19 assists to Oshkosh's seven while Oshkosh led in steals (8-5) and turnovers (8-17).

Carter Thomas (So. • Neenah) led UW-Oshkosh with 14 points. He made all six free throws while shooting three-of-11 from the field, including two-of-seven from three. He also paced the Titans with six rebounds (one offensive). Will Mahoney (Sr. • Appleton) scored 10 points. Matt Imig (So. • Ashwaubenon) recorded four assists and four rebounds while Michael Metcalf-Grassman (Fr. • Shawano/Waukesha) stole two balls.

Mahoney scored the first points of the game after Oshkosh took the tipoff, and the teams traded both points and leads on the next nine possessions. The deficit never grew to more than three points for either squad until Metcalf-Grassman kicked off an 8-0 spurt with a three with 6:15 left in the half. UW-Oshkosh led 26-20 by the end of the run, however the Blues scored six-straight to tie it back up and the scored sat at 30-30 by halftime.

Imig and Reed Gunnink (Sr. • Brandon) gave the Titans a five-point lead at the beginning of the second half and just like the last time they had a lead of more than a basket, Whitman matched them and tied the game at 35 with 16:02 remaining. The Blues scored 11-straight over the course of four minutes to lead 48-39 once the second half passed the 10 minute mark. Thomas helped Oshkosh back into the game, scoring all nine of the team's points over a minute and 20 second period. Gunnink made a layup to pull the Titans within a point and Reed Seckar (So. • Oshkosh) connected on a three, tying the game up at 53 with 6:15 to go. Gunnink followed Seckar's basket with another layup to give Oshkosh its final lead of the night and the Blues outscored Oshkosh 15-5 for the final four minutes of the contest.

The Titans return to the Kolf Sports Center for their next game, facing off against Ripon College (1-9, 0-3 MWC) on Monday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
