Mahoney Leads Oshkosh Over Pointers

OSHKOSH, Wis.- Will Mahoney led the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team to a decisive win over UW-Stevens Point in Kolf Sports Center on Wednesday night. With the win, Oshkosh has won the last six games against the Pointers, dating back to a 105-95 win at home on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2020.

First Half Summary

Hunter Plamann made a three to score the first points after each team started the game with a turnover. Eric Peterson scored three on an and-one layup making the score 6-0 before Stevens Point scored for the first time in the contest. A four-point deficit is the closest the Pointers could climb to for the rest of the half, with the Titans going on 11- and eight-point runs to take a 48-24 lead at halftime.

First Half Leaders

The Titans shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the field, 66.7 percent (four-of-six) from three and 100 percent (eight-of-eight) from the line in the half, also recording four rebounds. Mahoney came off the bench for 14 points, going a perfect six-of-six from the field and two-of-two from the line. Peterson and Plamann each scored 12 and 10, respectively. Levi Borchert led with five rebounds (two offensive) and the Titans recorded a combined seven blocks.

The Pointers shot 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from the field, 0 percent on five attempts from three and 100 percent (four-of-four) from the line. They were led by Josiah Gillie off the bench, who went four-of-seven from the field for eight points. He also recorded five rebounds (three offensive).

Second Half Summary

Recreating what Plamann did to start the game, Steckbauer scored the first basket of the second half with a three. Stevens Point was never closer than the 24-point deficit they started the half with, the already large Oshkosh lead with 8-0 and 6-0 runs by the Titans safely put the game away early. The game ended with an 81-45 score, the fewest points the Titans have allowed all season.

Full Game Leaders

Oshkosh finished the game shooting 53.7 percent (29-of-54) from the field, 52.9 percent (nine-of-17) from three and 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the line. Mahoney scored a season-high 19 points, finishing eight-of-nine from the field and three-of-four from three. He also recorded five rebounds. Peterson scored 17 and both Borchert and Plamann scored 12. Peterson tied his season-high four steals and Jonah Rindfleisch tied his season-high four blocks.

Stevens Point shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field, 21.4 percent (three-of-14) from three and 100 percent (four-of-four) from the line. Gillie finished with 16 points, going eight-of-13 from the field as the only Pointer with double digit points, also leading with nine rebounds (four offensive). 

Looking Forward

Oshkosh heads to Menomonie next to face UW-Stout on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. The Titans have not played in Johnson Fieldhouse since Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020. The Blue Devils currently sit at 4-12 (1-6 WIAC) with a nine-game losing streak.
