Warhawks Hand Titans Overtime Defeat

Derek Gray had 36 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the UW-Whitewater men's basketball team to an 82-78 overtime win over nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh as both teams returned to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday (Jan. 5) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Whitewater (10-4, 3-0 WIAC) owned a 42-22 lead with 18:20 left in regulation, but UW-Oshkosh roared back to send the game into overtime tied at 62 as the Titans finished the final 11 minutes of the second half on a 24-5 run.

UW-Oshkosh (12-2, 2-1 WIAC), ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, completed its remarkable second half comeback on an Eddie Muench 3-pointer that knotted the score at 62 with 1:27 to go in the second period. Following a Warhawks turnover at the 1:09 mark of the second half, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater both missed a field goal attempt, collected the offensive rebounds and misfired on a free throw on their ensuing possessions to set up the Titans for a final shot with 24 ticks remaining. However, UW-Oshkosh committed a turnover with 3.9 seconds, and UW-Whitewater did not get a shot off before the buzzer at the end of regulation.

The Titans reclaimed their first lead since the 11:12 mark of the first half following a Quinn Steckbauer layup six seconds into overtime. UW-Oshkosh did not trail again until Gray, who accounted for 10 of UW-Whitewater 20 points in overtime, buried a jumper for a 70-69 edge the Warhawks would not relinquish.

UW-Whitewater extended its lead to 79-72 with 12 seconds remaining in overtime, but Hunter Plamann hit a 3-pointer that trimmed the UW-Oshkosh deficit to 80-78 with one second left. Drew Fischer then drained a pair of free throws with 0.8 seconds to play to secure the victory for the Warhawks.

The Warhawks snapped a six-game losing streak to the Titans while also ending UW-Oshkosh's run of nine straight wins on the year and 14 in a row at home. UW-Oshkosh has now 46-7 in its last 53 home games.

Gray shot 14 of 27 from the field overall, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range, and scored 20 of his 36 points during the first half.

Carter Capstran and Fischer chipped in 17 and 10 points, respectively, for UW-Whitewater. Trevon Chislom paced the Warhawks with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Steckbauer led UW-Oshkosh with a career-high 25 points while Levi Borchert notched his eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Steckbauer surpassed his previous career best of 20 points established Thursday (Dec. 30) during a win over Ripon College. Borchert went 11 of 12 from the floor Wednesday to tie Adam Fravert for the best field goal percentage in program history with at least 10 made field goals. Fravert also went 11 of 12 from the field versus Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Dec. 29, 2017.

Plamann contributed 12 points and four assists for the Titans, who also received nine points from Muench, five points from Cole Booth, and six rebounds and four assists from Eric Peterson.

UW-Whitewater went 32 of 63 (.508) from the floor, 4-for-11 (.364) from beyond the 3-point arc and 14 of 20 (.700) at the free throw line. The Warhawks held advantages of 38-37 in rebounds, 7-5 in steals and 5-1 in blocks. Both teams committed 11 turnovers. UW-Whitewater, which entered the night ranked second in the country with a .526 field goal percentage, is the first opponent to outrebound the Titans in the past 15 games dating back to last season.

UW-Oshkosh shot 47.7% (31-65) from the field, 34.5% (10-29) from 3-point range and 35.3% (6-17) at the foul line. The Titans, who owned a 12-6 edge in assists, went into Wednesday ranked fourth nationally at 9.1 turnovers per contest.

The Titans scored 10 unanswered points to take a 10-3 lead early in the first half and maintained the advantage until Caleb Flaten-Moore scored in the lane to provide the Warhawks a 15-14 edge with 10:37 left in the opening period.

The Warhawks eventually scored 15 consecutive points to up their lead to 28-14 before heading into intermission with a 38-22 advantage.

UW-Oshkosh's 24-5 run to close out the second half featured eight points from Borchert, six apiece by Muench and Steckbauer, and four from Plamann.

The Titans travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 8).
