Titans' Hot Shooting Leads To Rout Of Johnnies

The nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team produced its best shooting performance in more than 12 years on the way to cruising past Saint John's University (Minn.), 89-55, during the opening game of the inaugural Jack Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday (Nov. 12) in Bloomington, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh (3-0), ranked 17th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, shot 40 of 65 from the floor for a .615 field goal percentage that matches the program's best shooting effort in the 304 games since going 32 of 52 (.615) from the field at Silver Lake College on Dec. 21, 2009.

The Titans never trailed Friday, seizing control early with an 18-2 run for a 22-6 lead at the 11:36 mark of the first half. UW-Oshkosh went on to maintain a double digit cushion for the final 33:19 of the contest before closing out the victory with a 15-4 run over the last five minutes.

Eddie Muench's 16 points paced a balanced UW-Oshkosh offense that featured 12 scorers and 64 total points in the paint.

Levi Borchert and Hunter Plamann added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Titans, who also received eight points each from starters Eric Peterson and Quinn Steckbauer as well as reserve Nick Otto. Peterson collected a game leading six rebounds. Plamann led all players with three assists.

UW-Oshkosh shot 4-for-17 (.235) from 3-point range and 5-for-7 (.714) at the free throw line while owning advantages of 33-26 in rebounds, 7-15 in turnovers, 9-4 in steals and 1-0 in blocks. Both teams dished out six assists.

Saint John's University (2-1) shot 23 of 53 (.434) from the floor, 3-for-20 (.150) from beyond the 3-point arc and 6-for-8 (.750) at the foul line.

Ryan Thissen led Saint John's University with 14 points. Colton Codute chipped in seven points and a team high three assists for the Johnnies.

Tied at 4 with 16:46 remaining in the first half, UW-Oshkosh put the game away with its 18-2 run. Plamann sparked the decisive run with a three-point play and Borchert followed with a pair of layups during a span of 24 seconds. The Titans shot 8-for-11 from the field in their 18-2 run that lasted nearly eight minutes as JT Petrie and Muench capped the spurt with jumpers for a 22-6 lead with 11:36 left in the opening period.

The Johnnies pulled within 28-18 with seven minutes remaining in the first half, but UW-Oshkosh responded with seven unanswered points via a Borchert three-point play and jumpers from both Muench and Steckbauer to push its lead back to 35-18.

After taking a 41-27 advantage into intermission, UW-Oshkosh began the second half with the first seven points following a Peterson 3-pointer, a Muench jumper and a pair of Borchert free throws that extended its lead to 48-29 with 18:34 to go.

A Muench layup upped the Titans' advantage to 68-40 with under 10 minutes left. UW-Oshkosh then held the Johnnies without a field goal over the final four minutes, building its largest lead on a Hart Holmgren jumper that provided the final score with 42 seconds to go.

UW-Oshkosh faces homestanding and fourth ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (2-0) on Saturday (Nov. 13) in the championship game of the Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational.
