Titans Clamp Down On High-Scoring Bruins

Charlie Noone had a game-high 15 points as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team rode a stellar defensive effort to a 78-49 victory over George Fox University (Ore.) on Saturday (Dec. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (5-3) recorded 11 steals and held George Fox University to its lowest-scoring output in the 108 games since the Bruins scored 37 points in a game during the 2011-12 campaign.

George Fox University (3-4) entered the contest averaging 82.2 points per game, but the Titans limited the Bruins to just 31.5 percent (17-54) shooting from the floor, including 25 percent (7-28) during the second half.

The Titans took control of the first meeting between the teams with a 20-3 scoring run for a 55-33 lead at the 14:48 mark of the second half.

UW-Oshkosh shot 50 percent (13-26) from the field during both halves and knocked down all 19 of its free throws. The Titans finished one made free throw from matching their own WIAC record of 20-for-20 at the foul line in one game.

The Titans, who extended their winning streak to three games, also owned advantages in rebounds (40-25), assists (12-6), turnovers (16-15) and steals (11-5).

Noone made 6 of 10 shots from the floor, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range in 17 minutes played as all 18 Titans in uniform received playing time.

Ben Boots and Taylor Jansen contributed 10 points apiece for the Titans while Jack Flynn had nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, and Brett Wittchow compiled seven points with a game-best four assists and two steals.

A layup by Flynn gave UW-Oshkosh a 17-11 lead with 13:32 remaining in the opening half, but George Fox University tallied seven unanswered points in the span of 97 seconds to reclaim an 18-17 edge.

Tied for the last time at 23, Wittchow drilled a 3-pointer for a 26-23 UW-Oshkosh lead the Titans never relinquished for the remainder of the contest.

Jansen sparked the Titans' 20-3 scoring run with a layup for a 37-30 cushion late in the first half. He also capped the spurt that spanned both halves on a layup just over five minutes into the second period.

UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Beyak registered a steal and banked in a 3-pointer just inside midcourt at the first-half buzzer to extend the Titan advantage to 42-31 at intermission.

UW-Oshkosh continued its surge in the second half by tallying 13 of the first 15 points of the period. The Bruins missed 10 of 11 shots from the field during the Titans' decisive scoring run spanned more than eight minutes.

The Titans held their largest lead of 31 points at 78-47 on a pair of free throws from David Vlotho with 100 seconds remaining.

Mason Green-Richards paced George Fox University with 14 points off the bench while starter J.J. Lacey added 13 points and two steals, and Dylan Hamlett registered a team-leading seven rebounds.
