Titans Lead Blugolds From Start To Finish
Charlie Noone led three Titans in double figures with 17 points as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team never trailed on the way to a 71-49 triumph over UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Feb. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.
Brett Wittchow added 13 points off the UW-Oshkosh bench, while Nick Olson matched his season high with 10 points. Wittchow made 5 of 7 shots from the field, and Olson made all four of his field goal attempts. Alex Olson led all players with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
UW-Oshkosh (14-8, 7-4 WIAC), which avenged a 67-50 defeat at UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 17 and snapped the Blugolds' five-game winning streak, moves into a three-way tie for second place in the league standings with UW-Eau Claire (14-8, 7-4 WIAC) and UW-River Falls (13-9, 7-4). UW-La Crosse (15-7, 9-2 WIAC) sits atop the league ledger with games to play.
The Titans ended the contest shooting 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field, including 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range, and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh held advantages in rebounds (32-28), assists (12-7), turnovers (17-9) and steals (7-5).
UW-Oshkosh limited UW-Eau Claire to just three points during the first 7:25 of the game. Sean Dwyer knocked down a 3-pointer for the first points of the game, and a layup by Max Schebel provided the Titans with a 7-1 advantage.
A 3-pointer by Ben Boots extended the UW-Oshkosh lead to 13-3 before the Blugolds tallied four straight points to cut their deficit to 13-7 with 11 minutes to go in the opening half. Consecutive 3-pointers by Dwyer and Noone gave the Titans a 21-9 lead, but UW-Eau Claire scored 11 of the next 16 points to pull within 26-20 with just under four minutes remaining in the first half.
Noone scored his 12th point of the first half on a 3-pointer that gave UW-Oshkosh a 33-23 advantage, and a 3-pointer by Wittchow at the buzzer made the score 38-26 at intermission.
The Titans began the second half with a 12-2 scoring run and led by at least 17 points for the remainder of the contest. The Titans opened their largest lead of 24 points at 54-30 on a layup by Wittchow with 13:06 to play.
UW-Eau Claire shot 40.9 percent (18-44) from the floor, but connected on just 4 of 19 (21.1 percent) attempts from 3-point range and 9 of 14 (64.3 percent) tosses from the foul line.
Diekelman paced the Blugolds with 10 points and five rebounds. Jack Martinek contributed nine points for UW-Eau Claire, while Jared Schneidermann led the team with four assists.
UW-Oshkosh heads to conference-leading UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 13). The Titans defeated the Eagles, 80-69, on Jan. 13 in Oshkosh.
