Pointers Escape From Titans In Closing Minutes

Stephen Pelkofer had a game-high 23 points as defending NCAA Division III champion UW-Stevens Point pulled away in the closing minutes for a 55-42 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 30) in Kolf Sports Center.

Pelkofer made 8 of 13 shots from the floor, including all three of UW-Stevens Point's 3-pointers. He also converted all four free throws while adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

UW-Oshkosh tied the score at 35 on a free throw by Nick Olson with 7:55 remaining, but UW-Stevens Point ended the game with a 20-7 scoring run. The Pointers limited the Titans to 2 of 10 shooting from the field during the decisive spurt.

The Titans were held to season lows in scoring, field goal percentage (.271) and 3-point field goal percentage (.150). UW-Oshkosh, which made just 3 of 20 3-point shots, entered the game leading the WIAC with 146 long-range baskets and a .387 3-point percentage.

UW-Stevens Point (11-8, 4-4 WIAC) ended the contest shooting 36.5 percent (19-52) from the field and held advantages in turnovers (13-7), blocks (5-4) and steals (8-3). The Pointers connected on 3 of 14 (21.4 percent) shots from 3-point range and 14 of 16 (87.5 percent) attempts from the foul line.

Zack Goedeke contributed 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds for the Pointers, who also received 10 points, three steals and two assists from Ethan Bublitz, and seven points, seven rebounds and two steals from Sean McGann.

UW-Stevens Point tallied the first six points of the game before UW-Oshkosh got on the scoreboard with a layup by Max Schebel nearly six minutes into the contest.

The Titans grabbed their first lead at 15-13 on a layup by Alex Olson with 5:48 left in the first half. UW-Oshkosh reclaimed a 20-18 advantage on a 3-pointer by Charlie Noone at the 2:58 mark, but UW-Stevens Point went into intermission with a 21-20 edge.

UW-Oshkosh got the lead back at 22-21 on a layup by Alex Olson just 13 seconds into the second half, but the Pointers answered with a 9-2 scoring run to reclaim a 30-24 advantage on a layup by Brad Freeborn with 15:06 to play.

The Titans rallied to get their last lead of the game at 34-33 after Alex Olson split a pair of free throws with 10:38 remaining. The Pointers then took the lead for good at 37-35 on a layup by Goedeke with 7:31 left.

UW-Oshkosh (11-8, 4-4 WIAC) broke a scoreless stretch of nearly six minutes when a pair of free throws by Ben Boots cut the Titan deficit to 45-37 with 1:59 to play.

The Pointers, who made all 12 of their free throws during the second half, owned their largest lead of 16 points (55-39) with one minute remaining.

Alex Olson paced the Titans with 14 points and three assists, while Charlie Noone added eight points and Nick Olson a career-high 11 rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 3). The Titans defeated the Pioneers, 86-81, on Jan. 9 in Platteville.
