Titans Unable To Overcome Early Deficit

George Diekelman had 17 points and eight rebounds to lift UW-Eau Claire to a 67-50 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Wednesday (Jan. 27) in Eau Claire.

Diekelman made 7 of 10 shots from the floor and added three assists and two steals as the Blugolds snapped a four-game losing streak to the Titans.

UW-Eau Claire (11-7, 4-3 WIAC) shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the field, including 41.2 percent (7-17) from 3-point range. The Blugolds committed just four turnovers and held a 40-32 advantage in rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh (11-7, 4-3 WIAC) entered the contest leading the league with 140 3-pointers and shooting 39.4 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, but the Titans were held to just six long-range jumpers on 22 attempts (27.3 percent). UW-Oshkosh shot 33.9 percent (19-56) from the floor overall, including 26.7 percent (8-30) in the first half.

Jack Martinek registered 13 points and eight rebounds for UW-Eau Claire, while Jacob Kohner chipped in 11 points.

UW-Oshkosh's Alex Olson hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game, and the Titans reclaimed an 8-7 advantage on a three-point play by Max Schebel with 14:16 left in the first half, but a pair of free throws by Martinek gave UW-Eau Claire the lead for good at 9-8 at the 13:58 mark.

Kohner capped a 10-point run with a layup that provided the Blugolds a 17-8 lead. A basket by Diekelman pushed the UW-Eau Claire advantage to 24-14, and the Blugolds held a double-digit lead for the last 27:27 of the contest.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first five points of the second half to cut its deficit to 37-25, but UW-Eau Claire answered with eight consecutive points for a 45-25 advantage on a three-point play by Andrew Duxbury with 15:53 to go.

A jumper by Diekelman gave UW-Eau Claire its largest lead of 24 points at 65-41 with just under four minutes remaining before the Titans scored nine of the game's final 11 points.

UW-Oshkosh's Charlie Noone scored all of his team-leading 12 points in the second half.

Ben Boots had nine points, four rebounds and one blocked shot off the Titan bench, while Olson had seven points and a team-high two assists. Nick Olson paced UW-Oshkosh with five rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh hosts defending national champion UW-Stevens Point on Saturday (Jan. 30). The Titans defeated the Pointers by a 64-59 score on Jan. 16.
