Titans Defeat Previously Unbeaten Pioneers

Twelve Titans scored as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team defeated previously unbeaten Carroll University, 67-51, on Wednesday (Dec. 30) in Wisconsin Dells.

UW-Oshkosh (7-4) trailed for just 26 seconds and led by at least seven points for the last 23 minutes of the contest. The Titans shot 56.8 percent (25-44) from the floor and held a 16-9 advantage in turnovers.

Kyle Bolger, Alex Olson and Max Schebel paced a balanced UW-Oshkosh scoring attack with 10 points each. Bolger and Olson tied for the team lead with five rebounds.

Ben Boots chipped in nine points for the Titans, who also received eight points from Brett Wittchow and six from Charlie Noone.

Carroll University (8-1) was held to 40.4 percent (19-47) shooting from the field, including just 17.6 percent (3-17) from 3-point range.

The Pioneers' 4-2 lead two minutes into the game lasted one possession as UW-Oshkosh's AJ Mueller hit a pair of free throws at the 17:30 mark. Sean Dwyer drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing for a 7-4 Titan advantage, and UW-Oshkosh maintained a lead for the remaining 35:49.

A layup by Schebel gave UW-Oshkosh a 23-16 lead with 3:22 left in the first half, and the Pioneers never trimmed their deficit to less than seven points for the rest of the game.

Boots knocked down two free throws to extend the UW-Oshkosh lead to 29-17, and the Titans went to intermission with a 29-19 advantage.

Carroll University closed to within seven points at 50-43 with 7:45 to go, but a 3-pointer by Olson pushed the UW-Oshkosh lead to 53-43 on the ensuing possession. Olson's long-range basket sparked a 17-4 scoring run that was capped on a 3-pointer by Bolger for the Titans' largest lead of 20 points at 67-47 with 97 seconds left.

Kyle Keranen had a game-high 21 points for the Pioneers, who also received seven points from Nick Lange and seven points and a game-best seven rebounds from Bryan Nagy.

UW-Oshkosh made 11 of its 17 (64.7 percent) free throws while Carroll University converted 10 of its 16 (62.5 percent).

The Titans have won seven of eight games in the series with the Pioneers. Carroll University had won the most recent meeting, 77-71, on Dec. 31, 2011.

UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-River Falls for the WIAC opener for both teams next Wednesday (Jan. 6).
