Titans Put Sabercats Away Early

Fifteen Titans scored as the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team jumped out to a sizeable first-half lead and coasted to an 89-44 victory over Maranatha Baptist University on Tuesday (Dec. 8) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (4-2) used a 33-2 run to build a 44-7 advantage with 3:12 left in the first half and held its largest lead of 50 points late in the second period.

Charlie Noone led all players with 12 points, and Kyle Bolger added 11 for UW-Oshkosh, which held advantages of 44-23 in rebounds, 30-16 in turnovers and 20-6 in steals.

No Titan played more than 18 minutes as UW-Oshkosh received 52 points from its reserves, including nine apiece by Ben Boots and Brandon Glandt. Kyle Beyak, Glandt and Ezeka Omeke each recorded three steals, while AJ Mueller and Alex Olson notched game-high totals of five rebounds and four assists, respectively.

The Titans, who won the only prior meeting with the Sabercats by a 70-57 score during the 2013-14 season, are averaging 92.3 points during their current four-game winning streak.

UW-Oshkosh and Maranatha Baptist University exchanged baskets in the first minute of play before the Titans rattled off nine straight points for an 11-2 lead with 15 minutes left in the opening half.

A 3-pointer by David Wenthold cut the Sabercat's deficit to 11-5, but UW-Oshkosh rattled off 11 unanswered points before a jumper by Maranatha Baptist University's James Coats made the score 22-7 with 10:30 to go in the first half.

A three-point play by Bolger on UW-Oshkosh's next possession ignited a string of 22 consecutive Titan points. Omeka's layup capped the run to give UW-Oshkosh a 44-7 lead at the 3:12 mark. The Sabercats missed 11 straight field goals and committed five turnovers during their scoreless stretch that lasted nearly eight minutes.

The Titans led, 49-13, at intermission after limiting the Sabercats to just 27.3 percent (6-22) shooting from the field. UW-Oshkosh scored 26 of its first-half points in the paint.

UW-Oshkosh tallied the first six points of the second half and led by at least 40 points for the last 19:31 of the contest. A three-point play by Sam Johnson gave the Titans their largest lead at 89-39 with 41 seconds remaining.

Maranatha Baptist University (4-2) shot 46.2 percent (12-26) from the floor, including 40 percent (4-10) from 3-point range, during the second half.

Clayton Morrison and Micah Shepard paced the Sabercats with eight points apiece.

UW-Oshkosh plays Carthage College on Saturday (Dec. 12) in Kenosha.
