Kohawks Spoil Titans' Home Openr

Jacob Timm scored a game-high 21 points and Trevor Haaland added 15 as Coe College (Iowa) defeated the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 75-70, on Friday (Nov. 20) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh gained its first lead of the second half at 63-62 on a 3-point basket by Charlie Noone with 4:18 remaining, but Timm gave Coe College a 67-66 advantage with a 3-pointer at the 2:11 mark.

UW-Oshkosh's Max Schebel split a pair of free throws to knot the score at 67, but Coe College (2-0) took the lead for good on a three-point play by Haaland that put Kohawks ahead, 70-67, with 92 seconds remaining.

The Titans' three ensuing possessions resulted in a turnover and two missed field goals, while the Kohawks missed four consecutive free throws before Matt Vonderhaar hit two tosses from the charity stripe for a 72-67 Coe College lead with 22 seconds left.

A 3-pointer by Sean Dwyer trimmed the Titans' deficit to 72-70 with six seconds to play, and Timm secured the Kohawk victory with two free throws with three ticks remaining.

UW-Oshkosh (0-2) ended its home opener with advantages in field goal percentage (.500 to .481), rebounds (35-30), turnovers (15-14) and steals (10-6).

Coe College connected on 50 percent of its 3-point shots (11-22), while UW-Oshkosh made 8 of 18 (44.4 percent) attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

The teams combined to make just 24 of 48 free throws, including 10-for-22 shooting (45.5 percent) by UW-Oshkosh.

Timm made 6 of 10 shots from the floor and all seven attempts from the free throw line, while Haaland went 5-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-6 on 3-pointers. Haaland led all players with five assists.

Coe College also received 11 points from Vonderhaar and eight points and eight rebounds from Marshall Shedeck.

Neither team led by more than four points until a 3-pointer by Vonderhaar put the Kahawks ahead, 25-18, with six minutes left in the first half. Trailing 27-20, UW-Oshkosh trimmed its deficit to 27-25 on a 3-pointer by Noone and a jumper by Ben Boots with 2:36 left in the opening period before a layup by Shedeck provided the Kohawks a 29-25 advantage at halftime.

Coe College opened the game's largest lead of nine points at 54-45 on a 3-pointer by Haaland with 9:39 to go. UW-Oshkosh closed to within 62-60 on two free throws by Boots at the 4:38 mark.

Noone paced UW-Oshkosh with 13 points. Alex Olson and Boots contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, while AJ Mueller had nine points and a game-best nine rebounds for the Titans.
