Titans Come Up Short Against 15th-Ranked Pointers

UW-Stevens Point survived a late rally to defeat the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 62-52, on Wednesday (Feb. 6) in Stevens Point. The Pointers (19-4/12-2 WIAC) are ranked 15th by D3hoops.com.

The Titans (6-16/1-12 WIAC) trailed by as much as 13, but cut their deficit to 53-50 with 2:28 left. UW-Oshkosh missed its last three shots from the field, while the Pointers nailed seven free throws in the closing 2:07.

Clayton Heuer led all scorers with 14 points, as Trevor Hass tallied 12 and Sean McGann had 10. UW-Stevens Point held a 34-26 advantage on the boards, using nine from Alex Richard and seven from Hass.

Jordan Giordana connected on two three-pointers in the first 1:33 of play. Heuer then scored five straight points and Nate VanHandel made a lay-up for the 18-5 lead.

UW-Oshkosh came back with a 13-4 scoring streak. Dylan Wurtz (Jr. • Kimberly) closed the run with back-to-back triples and a lay-in to make it 22-18 with 9:24 on the first-half clock.

The margin fluctuated between three and nine points for the rest of the period. Josh Hopfensperger (So. • Neenah) counted seven straight for the Titans to pull within 28-25. The Pointers carried a 34-29 lead into halftime.

Alex Olson's (Fr. • Brookfield) three-ball was UW-Oshkosh's first score of the second half, and it came after a drought of 4:22. Hass then counted a lay-up with the foul, and Richard hit a bucket inside, to stretch the lead to 48-36 with 9:34 remaining.

A 10-2 run got UW-Oshkosh within range. Olson started things with a deep jumper. Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun) swished two free throws with 2:28 to go, but that three-point gap (53-50) was all the Titans could obtain.

Nickel and Wurtz each finished with 11 points, in addition to four assists by both Sam Mageland (Sr. • Appleton) and Jade Royston (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells). The Titans were led by five rebounds from Sean Wise (Sr. • Wautoma), who also marked six points.

UW-Oshkosh totaled 39 percent (19-49) shooting from the field, including 33 percent (7-21) behind the arc and 88 percent at the foul line (7-8). The Pointers compiled 48 percent overall accuracy, with 3-of-11 shooting (27 percent) from downtown and 15-of-27 success on free throws (56 percent).

The Titans face UW-River Falls on Saturday (Feb. 9). All fans will be admitted free for the rededication of Kolf Sports Center.
