Blugolds Sweep Season Series With Titans

Jade Royston (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) tallied a game-high 19 points in UW-Oshkosh's 56-49 defeat at UW-Eau Claire on Thursday (Jan. 31).

Royston buried his first five shots from three-point range, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Blugolds' (10-11/4-8 WIAC) balanced attack. Jordan Petersen booked 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Nick Craggs marked 10 points and Andy Kleist nine rebounds.

The Blugolds led throughout the second half. UW-Oshkosh (6-14/1-10 WIAC) cut its deficit to 50-47 with a Dylan Wurtz (Jr. • Kimberly) three-pointer at the 1:11 mark. Petersen and Lewis Mau then hit two free throws each to ice the game.

Craggs scored the first five points for the Blugolds, but the Titans grabbed a 7-5 lead on Royston's first triple. Royston canned another deep jumper with 11:37 on the clock to go ahead, 15-6.

UW-Eau Claire bolted in front with a 14-4 run that featured four connections from downtown. After a three-pointer by Dustin Kalien, Jacob Kohner drilled one of his own to lead, 23-22.

Craggs swished another three-ball before halftime to make it 33-28.

To begin the second frame, Petersen drained a long-range bucket and then recorded a steal. Kalien spotted up and nailed another three-pointer for a 41-28 cushion.

The Titans counted 11 of the next 13 points, including eight by Royston. Alex Olson (Fr. • Brookfield) made a lay-up to pull within 45-41, but neither team scored for the next three minutes. Petersen's jumper with 4:11 left gained a six-point margin.

UW-Oshkosh also received seven points from Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun) and six from both Olson and Wurtz. Sean Wise (Sr. • Wautoma) chipped in with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

At the foul line, the Titans shot just 46 percent (5-11). UW-Oshkosh totaled 38 percent accuracy (18-48) from the field and 40 percent success on triples (8-20).

UW-Eau Claire claimed the rebounding battle, 36-24, while making 10-of-21 three-pointers (48 percent). The Blugolds committed 18 turnovers, but overcame them with 43 percent (18-42) overall shooting and 10-of-14 marksmanship on free throws (71 percent).

UW-Oshkosh makes a trip to UW-Superior on Saturday (Feb. 2).
