Eagles' Lights-Out Shooting Too Much To Handle

UW-La Crosse hit a season-best 15 three-pointers to top the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team, 80-59, on Saturday (Jan. 26) in Kolf Sports Center.

Jeff Heiden was the main culprit, knocking down 5-of-7 shots behind the arc. He totaled 17 points and five assists, while Lucas Collom tallied 18 points and three triples. The Eagles (13-6/6-4 WIAC) took the lead during the opening minute and held it the rest of the day.

Both squads started out on fire, as the teams combined to make 8-of-9 shots with 6-of-6 accuracy from downtown. Collom, Heiden, Lucas Morrissey and Luke Tweed each nailed a three-pointer in the first 4:06 to give UW-La Crosse a 14-9 advantage.

Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun), the WIAC leader with 68 triples, made two deep jumpers to keep the Titans (6-13/1-9 WIAC) competitive. Sean Wise (Sr. • Wautoma) sank a leaning shot midway through the half to pull within 16-13.

Heiden then took over with a pair of contested shots from long range. The first was a step-back off a crossover dribble. Three minutes later, Heiden buried a 25-footer with his quick release to make it a 29-15 score.

The Eagles took a 40-29 margin to halftime and increased it right away. The 15-2 scoring streak featured triples by Heiden, Morrissey and Braden Tice. With 13:36 left, Tice swished another deep ball for the 55-31 lead.

Jade Royston (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) counted a three-pointer, jumper and two free throws late to finish with nine points. Nickel led the Titans with 14 points, to go with Andre Wallace's (Fr. • Sun Prairie) seven points, seven rebounds and three steals.

UW-Oshkosh shot a season-high 49 percent (23-47), including 8-of-16 accuracy beyond the arc (50 percent). The Titans made 5-of-8 free throws for a 63 percent rate.

Including 15-of-27 shooting (56 percent) from long distance, the Eagles posted 59 percent overall marksmanship (31-53). They attempted just four foul shots, making three (75 percent). Tweed contributed 13 points, as Morrissey booked 12 points and six rebounds.

The Titans have a road game at UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 30).
