Hortman's Shooting Lifts Blue Devils Past Titans

Chris Hortman scored 18 consecutive UW-Stout points to spark the Blue Devils to a 76-50 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team on Saturday (Jan. 12) in Kolf Sports Center.

With 5:27 left in the opening period, Hortman swished a three-pointer to give UW-Stout a 23-19 lead. He then made six more shots without a miss, including three triples, to extend the Blue Devils' advantage to 38-24.

Hortman and Alex Oman each tallied 18 points for UW-Stout (12-3, 5-2 WIAC), which overcame 21 turnovers with shooting of 59 percent (32-54) from the field. Erik Olson totaled seven assists, to go with five rebounds apiece by Hortman and Jarvis Ragland.

Poor shooting hampered UW-Oshkosh (6-10, 1-6 WIAC) most of the game. The Titans missed their first 16 shots of the second half and finished with 27 percent (17-63) accuracy overall. UW-Oshkosh shot 24 percent (5-21) behind the three-point arc and 79 percent (11-14) from the free throw line.

Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun) led UW-Oshkosh with 11 points and three steals, while Andre Wallace (Fr. • Sun Prairie) tallied nine points and eight rebounds.

The Titans were efficient at the start, using a pair of Wallace baskets to go ahead 8-3. Sean Wise (Sr. • Wautoma) made a nice drive to the hoop that gave UW-Oshkosh a 12-11 lead with 13:17 left in the first half.

Hortman's heroics were part of a 20-7 scoring run that gave the Blue Devils a 40-26 halftime lead.

UW-Stout then turned up the defense, not allowing a point for the first nine minutes of the second period. Ragland had a breakaway dunk to make it 48-26. Oman then scored eight straight points, including two three-pointers, to extend the Blue Devils' advantage to 56-26. UW-Stout's largest lead was 61-28 with 10:30 left.

Nickel sank two deep jumpers around the eight-minute mark. Michael Patt (Fr. • Oshkosh) added two more three-pointers in the closing minutes for the Titans.

UW-Stout made 10-of-20 from long range (50 percent) and 2-of-3 free throws (67 percent). The Blue Devils compiled a 39-31 edge in rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh visits defending NCAA Division III and WIAC champion UW-Whitewater on Wednesday (Jan. 16).
