Matt Ellis brings a unique blend of collegiate playing experience and a burgeoning coaching career to UW-Oshkosh football program. His journey from a standout defensive back at Rhodes College to becoming a proficient special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach reflects his passion for the game and commitment to player development.

Playing Journey:

  • Collegiate Playing Career: Ellis made his mark on the football field as a dedicated defensive back at Rhodes College, where he played from 2013 to 2016. His time as a student-athlete laid the foundation for his profound understanding of the game and his relentless work ethic. He also helped the Lynx to the 2013 Southern Athletic Association title.

Coaching Journey:

  • Defensive Backs Coach, Millikin University - 2018: Ellis began his coaching career at Millikin University in 2018, taking on the role of Defensive Backs Coach. His ability to connect with and mentor young athletes became evident early in his coaching journey.
  • Special Teams Coordinator, Millikin University - 2019: Building on his successful start, Ellis expanded his coaching responsibilities to include special teams coordination in 2019. His strategic acumen and attention to detail greatly contributed to the team's performance. His role at Millikin also included serving as the head of video coordination and head travel coordinator.
  • Special Teams Coordinator & Defensive Backs Coach, Benedictine University - 2020-2021: In a challenging year marked by the novel coronavirus pandemic, Ellis continued to make an impact as the Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach at Benedictine University. His leadership and adaptability were instrumental in the team's 8-2 success in 2021.
  • Joining UW-Oshkosh - June 2022: In June 2022, Ellis joined the coaching staff at UW-Oshkosh, bringing his wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the program.
